Meet Shaun Graham of Phive 14 Photography in North Dallas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shaun Graham.

Shaun, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Photography is something that actually found me randomly in 2015. I believe as a creative, sometimes that’s the best way to stumble upon things. I’ve always been creative. A child, I had several books filled with anime characters lol. I was obsessed. Photography checks off so many of my desires in life. It gives me the ability to be creative, solve problems as well as express myself.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Ha, smooth. Photography, no Business, no. But a smooth ocean doesn’t make a skilled sailor. I’ve had client, not like my work. I’ve had bad years financially. I’ve had my gear stolen. But, I’ve been able to experience and tell so many amazing love stories that none of those rough times stick.

Photography is tough because it art and art is subjective. There are rules we must learn and as soon as you learn them, they tell you, “NOW GO BREAK THE RULES.” That’s the beauty of art. You’re trying to express yourself to someone else and ultimately, how effective your communication is will affect how well your art is received. There are so many YouTube University Graduates and your tube/social media stifle you so much. It’s all a lie. It makes you think you’re not good because you don’t have this camera or this lens or this light. The hard part about it all is simply finding your style and voice. I’m still looking for mine.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
I specialize in documenting love stories. Photography is the one superpower given to us in this life that allows up to freeze a moment in time. Decomposing that moment and dissecting it so that in 20 years from now, your child understands why you were in love is my goal. Life and death are a natural part of this world. But, good photos never die! They are our one chance we get to live forever, even if it’s just in the mind of others.

That’s what my business is about, that’s why I take photos. I’m most proud of that. I am documenting love in its most natural, raw, unfiltered state.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t believe in luck. Everything is for a reason. Things don’t just happen. Our job is to figure out why things happen and attack opportunity when it presents itself.
