Today we’d like to introduce you to Stacie Stewart.
Stacie, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
As a former graduate from New York University, I obtained degrees in Business Management and Finance. I worked in corporate America as an accountant for a few years and decided to change careers to work part time in the banking industry as a loan officer. After a few months of closing loans for investors. I began investing by purchasing and rehabbing properties. for a few years. I evolved from a loan officer to a full time real estate investor before relocating to Texas. My portfolio consisted of over 50 properties both commercial and residential.
Has it been a smooth road?
When moving to Texas in 2000, I began investing in fix and flip projects and within a few months new construction, at that time I was specializing in custom homes. By 2005 I had built over 80 homes in the DFW area. After 2007 and into 2008, the housing market for high end custom homes experienced a decline. I began building commercial projects in 2008 and until 2010, but due to a drastic drop in sales for homes, I lost my business and had to reorganize.
In May of 2012, I decided to start a new business to continue doing what I am passionate about doing in this male dominating field. I face daily challenges by being challenged of my knowledge in this business. I am constantly having to prove myself in my position as a builder. Dealing with the casual sexism doesn’t stop there but always being mistaken for the secretary or an assistant just because I am a young woman happens constantly.
I bring a new approach and attitude to the builder’s industry and my advice for the next generation of women in construction is both sobering and encouraging. Be aware that you may have to work harder and prove yourself but also know that you are well suited for your job based on your natural abilities to multitask and negotiate. It is a position of power and you need to be ready to carry the load and enjoy being in charge. If you do not like pressure or heavy responsibilities this is not the job for you, but the rewards are bountiful when you compile and manage a successful team and project.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I enjoy my profession and spending quality time with my family and friends. I like positive people who are open minded and have good attitudes about life. I believe in a balanced lifestyle and I dislike lazy people, people who do not practice integrity and people who do not take pride in themselves or the quality of their work.
