Today we’d like to introduce you to Tia Souter.
Tia, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started my Instagram page, Bllak Label, in November of 2017. I had the idea of starting a page dedicated to showing positive black images. One day out of nowhere, the name came to mind. I searched for the name on Instagram and created my own distinct spelling. Over time, I also started reporting on stories as well. I put a lot of time into crafting positive posts that eventually started going viral on social media.
Has it been a smooth road?
It has definitely been a challenge. I’m going on three years now. I’ve been consistent in putting out 6-10 pieces of new content per day. Some days, there’s an infinite amount of material to use and other days you have to dig really deep to find the content you are looking for. It’s tough working 12-15 hours per day as a Registered Nurse. I get home and try to put my content together for the following day. Often times, I’m working on my laptop until midnight or 1:00 am. I try to get enough sleep to be able to get up tomorrow and do the same thing all over again. Up until late last year, I was doing the entire thing on my own. I now have writers on board to help produce additional content. My brother, Vonte’, is also on board to help with the high volume of DM’s and email as well as outreach and events. With the help of these outstanding individuals, I will now be able to expand my brand.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Bllak Label – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
Bllak Label is a media platform based on Instagram. We provide an outlet for positive black stories from around the world. We are known for finding and reporting on unfamiliar stories. Today, we reach over 1.8 million people per week and have upwards of 5 million impressions per week. I remember a time when I had 0 followers and would get 2-5 likes per post. I am still shocked by the amount of engagement and impact that we have been able to have. Small businesses all over the world are reaching out for advertisement through our platform. I now have somewhere around ten writers. I am proud to say that we are giving other inspiring writers the opportunity to build an audience of their own! I am also proud that my brother & I are able to go on this journey together.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
My immediate family and I moved here about two years ago from Racine, Wisconsin. This is a much bigger city than where I am from. I like the “can-do” attitude of the people that I have conversed with. So many people here are successful in their business or career. There seems to be so many opportunities here. My least favorite thing would probably be the traffic!
