Meet Tosin Opaleke of Dallas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tosin Opaleke

Hi Tosin, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I began my career early, hosting over 400 weddings and numerous concerts, dinners, and corporate events.

In 2007, at age 10, I started as an Event Host or MC at Rhema Chapel International Churches Headquarters in Ilorin, Nigeria. During our annual children’s day service, I was selected to MC, marking the beginning of my journey. The success of that event led to more hosting opportunities, including children’s birthday parties, weddings, corporate events, and church concerts.

By 2010, I ventured into standup comedy, performing at various venues in Ilorin and Kwara State. In January 2013, I launched my first comedy tour, “Let The Students Laugh Comedy Tour,” visiting private high schools in Kwara State. This tour was a success and helped me build a loyal fan base. The following year, I staged my first one-man comedy show, “The Last Comic Standing.”

From 2015 to 2019, while attending the University of Ilorin, I performed and hosted shows across universities. I produced several comedy shows, including “Young MC’s One Night Standup Comedy,” “Young MC Missing in Action,” and “Gospel of Comedy,” and embarked on the “Young MC Born Again Again” tour.

In 2019, I went on my first international comedy tour in the United Arab Emirates, staging four shows. I also started producing shows for other comedians, as well as co-producing music concerts and a fashion show.

Between 2020 and 2022, I took a break from hosting and comedy to focus on my advertising agency. In 2023, after moving to Dallas, Texas, I resumed event hosting and standup comedy, performing at venues like the Dallas Comedy Club, Backdoor Comedy Club, Hyenas Comedy Club, Bourbon and Banter, and the Greenwich Comedy Club in New York City.

In March 2024, I launched Afro Comedy Club TX, a monthly show featuring African comedians in the DFW area. In May 2024, I staged my first comedy show in the United States, “Tosin Opaleke Live at the Bishop Arts Theatre – Agree to Disagree Comedy Show,” becoming the first African comedian to sell out the Bishop Arts Theatre. Furthermore, I recently opened for one of Africa’s biggest comedians – Basketmouth on his Cancel Culture tour in Dallas.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The journey has been smooth in the most of it. However, I struggled with my academics along the way, I did not prioritize things to do appropriately which ultimately caused me to spend an extra year in the university. It didn’t have any negative effect on my career in any way. I am thankful for that.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
Yes, I learned several important lessons during the Covid-19 crisis. One of the most significant is that entertainment services can be effectively provided virtually. I hosted two weddings via Zoom and five birthday parties, all of which were well-received by the clients. Additionally, I conducted a weekly comedy show every Sunday on Instagram Live during the lockdown, which helped me stay connected with my audience and continue to bring joy and laughter during a challenging time. These experiences showed me the power and potential of virtual events and broadened my approach to delivering entertainment.
