Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Bullock.
Brittany, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was never one of those people that dreamed about having a brand or business. In college, I studied PR and Psych. I wanted to go into market research specifically for niche markets. I ended up going into business development for a Fortune 500 and by year 2 I was ridiculously unhappy. I was living in a small college town in Kentucky where I didn’t know many people. I was running to Atlanta almost every other weekend to the point I felt like I was living there. I prayed over and over for a new job and a change of scenery and nothing was happening. When I turned 25 I decided to sit in my situation and make the best of it. Neither happy nor sad just content. I got out of my comfort zone. Discovered things I liked to do, wanted to do, etc. A lot of the time that meant doing it alone and I became ok with that.
A few months later I got offered a job and moved to Chicago. Totally opposite of the direction I wanted to go, but I knew people and finally felt as if I could have some sort of life as a young professional. It was almost like a whole new world. Unlimited activities, events, and social gatherings. I could easily go to 2-3 events in a night and go to work at 9 am the next day. After a while work got more complicated, I was traveling more for clients, and days swiftly passed. Balance wasn’t going on anywhere in my life at all. I was left with almost no energy to give to myself let alone other things. I had wanted to start a blog prior to moving but I wasn’t in the right space mentally or emotionally.
Fast forward to April 2016 I was offered a position in Dallas by my current company. I donated or gave away everything in my apartment outside of what I could fit in my car and drove 16 to Texas. Looking back I’m grateful for this path. I went from a city not knowing anyone and having to find places/event/activities to moving to a city where my network was vast and things to do easily fell in my lap. That’s what taught me balance. I am a big proponent of God putting you exactly where you need to be even if you don’t think you should be there.
There are three phases in our lives that matter the most when discovering purpose: enlightenment, assignment, and alignment. I feel as though my transition to Dallas is when I understood what and why my path had been what it was, I figured out what I was good at and it how to do it, and finally how everything has come together to work for my good.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It is absolutely not a smooth road by any means. I can say my path has been rocky from start. I grew up the product of two parents with drug addictions, suffered from depression heavily as a teenager and young adult, and a list of other things that have drug me down. A lot of them I caused myself by putting too much faith in myself and not in God. We all have our stories and things that happen to us but what we determine to do with them is where we find our purpose. We haven’t even touched the surface of what life has to offer us yet.
Sometimes it looks like people snap their fingers and boom! Everything works in their favor. For most of us that isn’t the case. It sounds easier than it feels but you have to keep going. There will be things to fall apart, ideas that can’t come to fruition, people that don’t want to work with you, and a whole list of other things to attack your being. Don’t sit too long in the things that don’t work that you don’t see all the things that do.
Recognize that you don’t have to do everything by yourself. At some point, you will have to go through a valley or two on your own but get a group of friends that will not only check on you but check you as well. I talk to the same few people daily and they keep me on task. Get a solid group that you can depend on you and vice versa.
We’d love to hear more about The Brittany B.
Most people met me or got to know me from events or traveling. Two things that I really enjoyed doing as hobbies became what I was good at. 9 to 5 I work as a consultant so I found an intersection between what I already to and how to apply it to passion projects. One side of my business is consulting on travel for groups. I was always doing it for my friends. I create custom itineraries and help people figure out what to do and where to go. I didn’t have the means to travel when I was younger. As an adult, it is something I became extremely passionate about. The other side is around events. Helping clients conceptualize their events from start to finish as well as during. On both sides I pay attention to detail, what my client’s personality is, their goals, etc. Having such an in-depth background in business really helps me build strategic plans that others are not capable of doing.
So much of the media coverage is focused on the challenges facing women today, but what about the opportunities? Do you feel there are any opportunities that women are particularly well positioned for?
There aren’t any opportunities we are particularly well positioned for. We are good for all of them. There are a good amount of opportunities for women but there should be more especially at the executive level in Corporate America. There is a lot of room to catch up there. On the entrepreneurial side, women are leading the pack in building businesses. For those of us that do both, we have our struggles. I’ve been in rooms with groups of high power business owners where I am the only woman or person of color and they have tried to discredit my findings, thoughts, or ideas when they are very sound and factual. Decisions about women are being made by people other than the decisions apply to. We have to continuously work towards change and need our counterparts to work with us.
