Today we’d like to introduce you to Courtney Bosworth.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Hi y’all! I am DFW wedding and portrait photographer! I grew up in the small town of Hudsonville in Michigan and moved to Texas in 2006. Since I was little, I have always wanted to work with kids and serve in the classroom. I have a passion to teach, serve, and coach students. I began studying for my teaching degree after moving here, but then things changed!
In 2008, I decided to change my major and pursue nursing. I knew to go into this major, it would require hard work and some sacrifices. I pushed myself and applied to 3 different nursing programs. One day, I received my letter from UT Tyler that I was accepted into their nursing program. I couldn’t have been more excited. I felt that this is what God had planned for me to serve kids and help them in the hospitals. I attended UT Tyler for one semester while working in a hospital and realized I missed the classroom and the creativity that teaching brought.
In the Fall of 2009, I went back to the University of Texas at Arlington to continue my degree in teaching. I graduated in 2011 with my Bachelor’s degree in elementary education. I was so excited when I accepted my 1st teaching position as a 6th grade English teacher! From there, I tend to teach 4th grade and switched to Frisco ISD. I taught 6th grade Social Studies and had the passion to coach. While teaching in Frisco ISD, I coached 8th-grade volleyball, basketball, and soccer. Every Thursday night, you could find me on the sidelines losing my voice from cheering my girls on displaying my passion for coaching.
Then, the year 2014, when my world was changed. I met my wonderful, sweet husband at Crossfit Flower Mound. We dated and he asked me to marry him in December of 2014 in San Francisco. We married each other in 2015! Then, the Lord blessed us a year in a half later with another life change.
We welcomed our sweet baby boy in December of 2016 and my career changed. I decided to stay home with our little one and chase a new dream as a wedding photographer. I decided I wanted to serve others, create timeless memories, create lasting friendships, and capture others’ stories through my lens. In September of 2017, we found out the Lord was going to bless us with another little miracle and it just reaffirmed to me that one of His purposes for me is photography. Capturing other families and their stories with my lens have become everything I hoped it would be.
I have absolutely loved getting to meet my brides/grooms and new families. I have had opportunities to work alongside many talented local photographers and mentors in this industry and I truly wouldn’t be where I am today without their guidance. It brings me joy to capture these stories through my lens and create timeless moments for others to look back on. Probably, my favorite thing is celebrating marriages and seeing the Lord bring two people together as one. It’s such an honor to be part of those special days!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Over the past years, there have been struggles and there will always be struggles. I believe having struggles allows me to grow as a photographer, mom, and a wife. When starting out in photography, I started following many photographers on Instagram. I constantly see a lot of their photos and start comparing them to my own. I would create this self-doubt and ask myself “Why am I doing this?” Sometimes, we are our own worst critics. Over the past year, I have been trying to find my purpose and my why in photography. I have been photographing weddings, maternity, newborns, and families. I enjoy all of these and I believe all of these are precious moments worth preserving.
Another struggle that I have been experiencing recently is balancing home life with photography. It has been a struggle being a full-time mom with two boys under the age of 2 and full-time photographer. I find myself wrestling daily with the boys, but I have such a loving husband that is supportive of me, comes home early so I can go to meetings or sessions or allows me to have some time to myself to sit and edit. I have appreciated what the Lord has done for our family and for my business, but I am blessed to have this opportunity to continue my creativity and to serve others!
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Courtney Bosworth Photography – what should we know?
Courtney Bosworth Photography specializes in wedding photography in the Dallas/Fort Worth area and focuses on using natural light! I am known for my bubbly personality and making couples and families feel special!
My photography style is bright, airy, dreamy, and joyful! I love to serve my clients and make the center of the photograph. I strive to make my sessions more about capturing a story than simply posing them for photographs because I believe that’s the way to create memories for my clients. I use the natural light to create those bright, airy photos with a pop of color.
I’m most proud of how I am able to serve my clients and share their stories through my images. Being a mom of 2 boys under the age of 2, photography allows me to meet families and couples and create long-lasting friendships. Photography allows me to have a creative side outside of being a full-time mom. I love when clients walk away from meeting with me and tell me how they were able to connect with me on a different level and they love my bubbly personality. I love to serve my clients and making them walk away feeling relaxed and excited about the precious moments we just captured!
Finding a mentor and building a network are often cited in studies as a major factor impacting one’s success. Do you have any advice or lessons to share regarding finding a mentor or networking in general?
My family! My husband has been one of the best supporters of my passion for photography. After having our 1st boy, we talked about having me stay home and quit teaching. I told him I would love to do photography as well on top of being a full-time mom. He has been motivating me from the 1st session I have ever done and encouraging me to keep going. We now have our needy boys, and he has been so gracious taking them on the weekends when I have weddings or in the evenings when I have sessions. He hasn’t doubted me from the beginning and is my number one fan.
Lindsay Davenport – Lindsay was the 1st photographer I was able to learn valuable knowledge about photography. She opened her home to 12 inspiring photographers to share her knowledge about this wonderful passion. I couldn’t have been more excited for that day to come to learn from her and her husband, Jordan. Their passion to teach others about photography truly showed in their home. She has created a community group on social media for those that took her course to ask questions that we have and does live videos for us. Lindsay, I can’t thank you enough for sharing your passion for me and allowing me to photograph/assist alongside you!
Maggie Hargrave! She has been such a mentor to me. She has given me the chance when most photographers haven’t. She has allowed me to photography alongside her at weddings and learns from her. She has shared her knowledge about photography and the business side. I am not sure if I can ever repay her for all she has done for me in the past 1 year. Maggie, you are truly an amazing photographer and I am blessed to have you as a friend and as a photographer.
Lastly, a community that encourages me: I am part of several community groups through social media. In these groups, photographers support and encourage each other even if one of us is down or need a boost of confidence that we can do this. I strongly believe being part of a community helps and having the right tools and resources have been the biggest blessing in my photography and business.
