Lauryn, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’m a Christ follower, so how I got started as a wardrobe stylist is my Heavenly Father’s doing. It was His idea. I was totally reluctant at first. I am self-taught. And I thought I didn’t know what I was doing, but slowly but surely I began to gain knowledge, truly falling in love with the art. I realized that some just have style and others simply do not. Take Iris Apfel, she’s glorious at how she dresses. So, whether or not I was trained in school, shouldn’t matter. At least that’s how I see it now. So to say it was the Lord’s doing is a total understatement, as I didn’t want to. I was happy with being a jewelry maker. However once I trusted Him, I began to love it. It has been such a learning experience, it keeps me on my toes, as it should since fashion is ever evolving. Just the fact that I don’t feel like I am working when I am with a client, should say something. You know the saying “Do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life?” That says it all!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No. It has definitely not been a smooth journey. But, I believe that you need to always keep learning – if you stop learning, you’ve either hit a brick wall or you’re dead. Learning and making mistakes are two things I would say to do. It’s inevitable that you’re going to make a mistake or two, and you need to learn from it. With time and lessons learned, you can really sharpen your skill. After 6 years of being a wardrobe stylist, I am still learning how to obtain lasting clients, not just one hit wonders. And I just started styling editorial photo shoots and as that too is/was a learning curve. But part of the process and progress, is to learn and experience new things. Try or learn something new, It’s worth it.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about StyledByRyn – what should we know?
Well, I’m a wardrobe stylist and writer. I am the middle man per se, I go between you, your personality and your wardrobe. Helping to ignite a spark in you. I help you feel confident in the clothes you wear. Empowering humans to love the clothes they wear is my ultimate goal.

The focus should be about how your clothes should be working for you, bringing out your true personality. It’s important to have great style, as it only takes 3 seconds for someone to assess you upon meeting. It’s really important to know how to work your wardrobe, and that’s where I come in. Whether it’s going to your home and rummaging through your closet, disposing of the clothes you no longer should be wearing, pairing outfits together and organizing said closet, to going shopping with you to ensure that you’re getting the best styles and garments for your wardrobe, body type and lifestyle.
I also love to style editorial photo shoots and I’m technically a blogger, but I am passionate about writing in general.
What I’m most proud of as a service provider and brand is the fact that even when things get tough, I still persevere. I keep going and I stay positive. And I keep learning. I’m also proud of the photo shoot I coordinated and styled back in January benefiting the END IT movement, I rallied a group of local creatives to shine a light on slavery. It was awesome!

Do you feel like there was something about the experiences you had growing up that played an outsized role in setting you up for success later in life?
Yes! Since I was a child, I have always loved to go shopping & creating outfits. I can’t say all of my outfits I created were successful, but I also believe you should always have fun with your closet. Shopping/styling/writing & being an entrepreneur is in my blood. My grandmother owned a salon called the snooty fox, waaaay before I was was born. and my Mother worked at a magazine publisher at one time and at another time was a personal shopper. She also trained me up in the way I should go, which was shopping along side her when I was growing up. And mentioning the countless hours that I have watched What Not To Wear. I Loved that show! Learning from Stacy London and Clinton Kelly was probably one of the best things I could have done while growing up, given that I became a wardrobe stylist too. The styling tips on how a garment should fit on the body and the wisdom of how you shouldn’t wear a mini skirt past the age of 35 will stick with me for a lifetime.

And Ever since I was 15, I was always on an entrepreneurial path. I started a bottle cap necklace company and launched many things after that. It all started by me making bottle cap necklaces and selling them for $5 a piece. They were all the rage, my then crush even purchased one. to my 15 year old self that itself was a success! Those lessons and encounters with customers set me up with a great launching pad for a business mindset & I am forever grateful! Also, I’m a pretty positive person and I truly believe being positive attracts success.

Lauryn Bray is amazing! She helped me to find things in my closet I was ignoring. You might think having a clothing fashion stylist would be an expense. However, it is really a valuable service, instead of thinking I need an entire new wardrobe, she helped me see what I already have. Then also gave me a small shopping list to make the most of what I already have. As a portrait photographer clients are always telling me how I inspired them, encouraged them, help their tweens and teens gain confidence. I just do what I love! Working with Lauryn was like being on the other side, having someone come into my closet and help me to find me. I recommend Lauryn to my photography clients, she is able to help you get the look you want without the stress!

We love how Lauryn styled our family photo shoot! I didn’t have to do a thing. She chose perfect styles for my husband, myself, and our son. It made the photo session so much more enjoyable knowing I didn’t have to go shopping!
