Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Nguyen.
Megan, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was raised in Oklahoma City and studied Fashion in Chicago. After graduating with my B.A. in Fashion Design, I moved to L.A. That was where I actually discovered the makeup industry. While growing up, I never thought about becoming a makeup artist, but I have always been visually creative; and also enjoyed sketching faces of people. I eventually decided that I wanted to transition my sketching skills to “painting” on live faces. So, I invested in my education at the Empire Academy of Makeup and learned the fundamentals to the advanced techniques for beauty and fashion makeup. After I graduated from Empire, I did a lot of test shoots to build my portfolio and also started booking work for various types of shoots. I also went to school for cosmetology and earned my license. Later on, I moved to Dallas for personal reasons and had to rebuild my professional network.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I have hit a lot of bumps along the way. One of my biggest mistakes is not editing my portfolio book well enough before I met with a celebrity photographer or artist agency that I wanted to work with. You have to really think about what images will appeal to them and the work they represent. Just because it’s a published tear sheet, doesn’t mean you should automatically include into your book.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Beauti Marked by Megan Nguyen – what should we know?
I mainly do makeup for individual clients, corporate shoots, tv and commercial work. I guess I am known for my ability to do clean beauty to elegant glam that looks effortless and not overdone. I can do makeup for any age and skin tone. I also like to advise my clients on how they can improve their skin problems naturally, instead of just masking it with makeup.
Which women have inspired you in your life?
I am inspired by all the entrepreneurial single mom who run their own business and able to support their family; because doing this line of work is already hard enough without little mouths to feed.
