Today we’d like to introduce you to Tristyn Donihoo.
Hi Tristyn, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Some of my earliest and fondest memories are baking with my grandma, standing on a little stool, covered in flour, and thinking it was pure magic how a few ingredients could turn into something so comforting. That’s where my love for baking really began.
For years, it was just a passion I kept close — something I turned to during life’s highs and lows. But after becoming a mom and going through a major life shift, I found myself craving something that was just for me. Baking became more than just a hobby; it became a lifeline. The more I leaned into it, the more it felt like, okay… maybe this is what I’m supposed to be doing.
That’s when I decided to take the leap and enroll in pastry school — to invest in myself, learn the technical side, and really commit to turning this dream into something real. From there, I started building Onyx Moon Baking Co., one order at a time, right out of my kitchen.
Now, I get to wake up every day and do what I love — create beautiful treats, celebrate people’s special moments, and build something meaningful not just for myself, but for my family and community. What started as a personal passion has turned into the most unexpected and fulfilling adventure — and I’m just getting started.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definitely not a smooth road, but I don’t think the best things ever are.
Building this business while being an only parent has come with its fair share of challenges. There were (and still are) a lot of late nights, early mornings, and moments where I question if I could really do it all. Juggling mom life with the demands of running a business (while also going to school) meant constantly switching hats and finding balance where there often wasn’t any.
But I’ve been incredibly lucky to have my parents as my rock. Their support, especially with helping me care for my son, has made all the difference. I truly couldn’t do this without them. They’ve stepped in on the hard days, cheered me on during the big moments, and reminded me that I don’t have to do it all alone.
There were times when things felt overwhelming — when orders were slow, or I was exhausted and spread thin — but I kept going because I believed in what I was building. Every setback taught me something new.
It’s been messy and emotional and sometimes really hard, but also incredibly beautiful.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Onyx Moon Baking Co.?
Onyx Moon Baking Co. is a small-batch, custom-order bakery where everything is made with intention, creativity, and a whole lot of heart. I specialize in French macarons, custom cakes, decorated cookies, and curated dessert boxes — the kind of treats that make people say, “this is almost too pretty to eat” (but then they eat them anyway and go back for more).
What sets my business apart is the personal touch behind every order. I don’t mass-produce — each treat is made thoughtfully, often inspired by someone’s story, celebration, or even just a color palette they love. I care deeply about the experience people have when they open a box from me.
Brand-wise, I’m most proud of how Onyx Moon has become known for blending artistry with warmth. It’s not just about pretty sweets — it’s about connection, creativity, and making people feel celebrated. I’ve worked hard to build a brand that feels elevated, but still approachable, polished, but personal. Every detail, from the packaging to the flavor combinations, is a reflection of that.
More than anything, I want readers to know that this isn’t just a business. It’s a love letter to resilience, motherhood, and creativity. I truly believe there’s something magical about handmade desserts. I feel lucky to get to share that magic with others every day.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Something that might surprise people is that I’m actually a pretty introverted person, which is funny, because my brand is very expressive and people focused. I pour so much of myself into my work, but behind the scenes, I’m happiest in a quiet kitchen with a podcast or audiobook playing, just creating my own little world.
Also… I never intended to be a business owner. I didn’t grow up thinking I’d run a bakery. What started as a creative outlet during a hard season turned into something so much bigger than I ever imagined. I still have moments where I pause and think, “Wait… this is really my job?” It’s wild, and I’m so grateful.
