Today we’d like to introduce you to Ze’Kara Perry.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Ze’Kara. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
The Beauty industry has always intrigued me and has always been a way that I have expressed myself, whether it was with my hair, nails, or makeup. I was so intrigued that I decided in 2009 to take it on as a career. To reach that goal, I attended Ogle Beauty School in Arlington, TX.
After graduating in 2010, I went on to State board and became a licensed cosmetologist in the state of Texas. I was extremely blessed because my business flourished almost immediately. After working in a few salons and building my clientele, in 2013, I decided to open my own beauty salon where my business definitely thrived. Unfortunately, in 2016 I was in a terrible car accident that hindered me from doing hair like I used to before my injury. I tried working as a part-time hairstylist and I just was not feeling it at all, I kept the faith and continued styling as best that I could, but my fire for the cosmetology industry finally fizzled out in April of 2017 when I lost my father. I then went to working the normal 9-5 as a Pharmacy Technician (how fun?).
In late 2018 early 2019, my health suddenly changed, almost overnight. I found myself on medical leave for a significant amount of time. Things were pretty tough for me, I functioned only because I am a mother before it all and I had to be strong for my boys, but the majority of times I remained at home in bed, with only my thoughts, a quiet house, and YouTube. It all started with a simple how-to video. One thing leads to another and next thing I know, I am buying nail equipment and practicing daily. I felt like I had back the fire that I once had when I first started out in the beauty industry; my passion was restored! “Zee Nailed It” came from a place of pain and suffering, and with a click of a video, I became a “self-taught” nail technician, a title that I am super proud of.
Has it been a smooth road?
I honestly would not say that the road has been perfect, but I will say that I have been extremely blessed. Having a Cosmetology background, although I initially only did hair, it most certainly helped with being able to perfect my skill more rapidly than the norm. However, just because it was not as hard for me as it may have been for others, does not mean that there were no struggles. I would say the biggest struggle would just be building my brand. I do not think people fully understand the amount of time and work necessary to build your brand, a SUCCESSFUL brand at that. Also, as a business owner, you must have that charismatic personality. One that can captivate your clients but also keep them wanting to come shop or get their nails done or whatever your business entails.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
So, the name of my company is “Zee Nailed It” which of course, through the name would hint that I am a Nail tech. I would not say that I have a specialty only because my talents are so diverse. Now prior to me doing nails, I was known for doing hair, which is something I still have a passion for! As a company, I would have to say I am most proud of how far my business has come along within the short amount of time I have been doing nails.
I think what sets me apart from others would be my high-quality work & affordable prices as well as my will to learn more and the fact that I get better with each set that I do, although it does take time to create and perfect my client’s vision for their nails. I pride myself on being able to offer those two good qualities for my clients.
