Rising Stars: Meet Alexandra Johnson of National

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexandra Johnson.

Hi Alexandra, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I initially started my Instagram as a creative outlet to share photos from my travels, especially trips to places like Switzerland and Italy. At the time, it was simply a way for me to capture and post moments from my life.

Over time, I began to fall in love with the creative side of content creation. I became more intentional about building a personal brand, focusing on a specific aesthetic and a distinctive color scheme. That shift made a big difference, some of my posts, especially photo carousels like my graduation pictures and travel content from places like Japan, started gaining traction and reaching 10–15k views.

From there, my content naturally expanded. I began sharing more about university life, outfits, makeup looks, and even parts of my Christian faith. Along the way, I’ve been able to connect with a community of creators ranging from 1k-5k followers to those with over 100k followers. It’s been really meaningful to build relationships with people from different universities and backgrounds, especially when we collaborate or even represent some of the same brands.

Through building my platform, I’ve had the opportunity to be a brand ambassador for companies like Bubble and Charlotte Tilbury, which I’m incredibly grateful for. It’s been such a rewarding journey, and I truly see it as a blessing.

If I could give one piece of advice, it would be to just start. You never know where your content can take you or the connections you’ll make. Social media has opened so many unexpected doors for me, and I’m really glad I took that first step.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t been a completely smooth road. I started creating content in high school, before I had any college experience in marketing or branding, so a lot of it was trial and error. As I became more serious about growing my platform, I realized there was a whole strategy behind it…things like SEO, hashtags, timing, and audience engagement, which I had to teach myself from scratch.

One of the biggest challenges was understanding that there’s no one-size-fits-all approach. What works for one creator doesn’t always work for another, so I had to spend time experimenting with different types of content, themes, and posting strategies. There were definitely moments where posts didn’t perform the way I expected, which could be discouraging, but it pushed me to keep learning and adjusting.

Over time, I started to identify patterns that worked for me, like specific hashtags and visual styles that resonated with my audience. I also learned a lot by observing other creators and reaching out to them for advice, especially when it came to post strategies and navigating brand partnerships/ambassadorships. Those conversations really helped broaden my perspective and made me feel less alone in the process!

Looking back, those challenges were actually what helped me grow the most. They pushed me to be more intentional, more strategic, and more confident in building something that’s truly my own.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I create lifestyle and travel content with a strong focus on capturing aesthetic, story-driven moments, especially through digital camera photography, which has become a big part of my brand! I often shoot with my Kodak and Canon SX740 HS, and I love the nostalgic, candid feel that digital cameras bring to my content.

I’d say I’m known for my travel content and curated photo carousels, particularly from places like Europe and Asia. Earlier on, I focused heavily on a specific aesthetic, especially coastal and “European summer” style content, but over time, I realized my audience connected more when I showed different sides of my life. That shift pushed me to become more multifaceted in what I share, from travel and special events like prom and graduation to everyday lifestyle moments.

What sets me apart is that balance between consistency and variety. While I maintain a recognizable style through my editing, having warmer tones in my photos, and color grading, I also prioritize giving my audience diverse content so it always feels fresh and engaging. Even before I had a digital camera, I worked on developing my own editing style using just my iPhone, especially during many trips abroad to places like Japan, Switzerland and Italy, and some of those posts became my highest-performing content.

What I’m most proud of is how I’ve grown from simply posting photos to building a personal brand with intention. I’ve learned to evolve creatively, take risks with my content, and stay authentic while still adapting to what resonates with my audience.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
There are so many people who deserve credit for supporting me throughout my journey. First and foremost, my best friend Grace Wei has been there from the very beginning. We’ve been friends since seventh grade when we were both competitive swimmers, and she has always been one of my biggest supporters. Whether it was liking my posts, hyping me up in the comments, or simply encouraging me when I felt unsure, she consistently gave me confidence and reminded me to keep going. Even now, she continues to support everything I do, from content creation to other projects in my life.

I also want to thank my sister, Krystal Johnson, who inspired my interest in marketing. Seeing her pursue that path and have such a positive experience made me want to explore it myself. My dad has also been an incredible supporter! He’s always had my back and made an effort to understand what I do, even when the “influencer world” isn’t something he’s naturally familiar with.

I’ve also been fortunate to build a strong community of friends and peers at my university, who have supported me along the way. Through organizations like the Collegiate Entrepreneurs’ Organization and the American Marketing Association, I’ve met people who constantly encourage me, especially as I’ve taken on brand ambassador roles and grown my platform. Special thanks to Isabella, Meg, Sruthi, Zayn, Julianne, Rachel, PhuongThao, Anh, Aaliyah and Hasan.

Lastly, I’m really grateful for my grandparents and cousins, who have supported my creativity from a young age and continue to show love on everything I share. And of course, my audience, those who consistently engage with my content, whether through likes, comments, or messages, mean so much to me. Their support is a huge part of why I’ve been able to grow and stay motivated.
