Rising Stars: Meet Chris Brown of Dallas-Fort Worth

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris Brown.

Chris, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I came of age in the “cultural decade” of the 1960’s. The influences from that period – the music, the style, the art and media, all play a large role in my publication Refueled.

I created his first magazine when he was eight years old. From those sheets of typing paper sprang a vision inspired by the large format photos of LIFE, the satirical vibe of MAD, and the people and times that surrounded me. From the beginning, I saw Refueled more as personal journals rather than a magazine. Contained in its pages today are the people and subjects that inspire me

Through Refueled, I’ve had the great pleasure of being able to share what I’ve learned, experienced, and created over the years. I have been given some incredible opportunities that include speaking about indie publishing through events such as TEDx and HOW Design Live. I’ve appeared in the Netflix exclusive documentary “Making of the American Man”, and contributed to the book “Men and Style; Essays, Interviews and Considerations” by David Coggins.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I feel extremely fortunate that Refueled found an audience early on – one that has stuck around for the past 20 years.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am the founder, publisher, creative director of Refueled – a brand/magazine/lifestyle that focuses on community, heritage, and discovery. Refueled is celebrating 20 years – something I’m really proud of. I feel the commitment of staying true to my gut is what sets Refueled apart.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
As mentioned, staying true to your gut and vision keeps you on a straight path.
