Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeanine Sybico.
Hi Jeanine, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
Since I was a kid, I always loved cartoons. I loved watching and drawing them, but it never crossed my mind that I could actually try to pursue a career in them. I was always told that, eventually, I would outgrow my love for it. So, I tried different routes in school – I was really good at math and enjoyed it! I auditioned for and participated in countless honor bands in high school. Computer science took a minute to develop skills, but eventually, I was an A student in my classes. But by my mid-college career, it all came back to where I started – Cartoons. It’s a little embarrassing to admit, but it took me that long to realize that my love for cartoons had never ended. I was still going online to binge episodes of my favorite shows, still reserving seats at the theater for the latest Pixar movie, and most importantly, still drawing and creating my own art.
Luckily for me, I still had time to adjust my major and transfer to a school that was more suited for the industry. With the knowledge I gained from my studies, I was able to join the production management team at ATKPLN, and it’s been a wonderful 3-year (and counting) journey!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I personally struggled a lot with the question, “What do you want to do?” At the time, it felt like answering it would alter the course of my entire life with no turning back. This resulted in spending a little bit of time on many things to see what would stick. However, now I find myself in a spot where I can take a step back and can see that you’re allowed to take whatever winding road you choose, and that’s okay.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am currently an Associate Producer at the design studio ATKPLN. What has best aided me in this role is my background as an artist and the knowledge that I have gained studying computer graphics. By better understanding the actual process of the work that I help organize, it helps bridge the gap that is found so often between production management and artists. Speaking more about my artistic background, I enjoy working on character design, fan art, and comics! Most recently, I worked on the first volume of Bounty Light (written by Jayperior), where I contributed pencils and cover art. This comic portrays a diverse cast of characters in a fun shounen-inspired laser tag tournament and was a blast to work on!
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
If you ask any of my co-workers, they probably know the answer – Pikachu. I have a small shrine of this character that’s visible from my video camera, and it’s always a great conversation starter with clients.
