Today we’d like to introduce you to Karin Furui.
Karin, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I am a dancer based in New York originally from Japan.
I first became aware of dance as a profession when I attended a live concert by Japanese artist I admired in elementary school. Since it was my very first concert, I was incredibly excited to see my favorite artist perform. However, when the show began, it was the dancers who completely captured my attention. In that moment, I thought, “I want to stand on that stage someday.” That experience became the biggest reason I decided to pursue a career as a dancer.
After that, I began taking classes at a dance studio in my hometown. Through dance, I was introduced to many artists from around the world, not just those from Japan. One of the artists who had the greatest impact on me was Missy Elliott. My mother often played her music videos on tv, and I became fascinated by the dancers performing alongside her. Watching those videos made me dream of becoming one of her dancers someday.
That dream is what ultimately brought me to the United States. Although I have not had the opportunity to work with Missy Elliott YET I continue to believe that day will come. Until then, I give my full effort to every opportunity in front of me, knowing that each experience brings me one step closer to achieving my goal.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It is not!
The first challenge I faced after moving to the United States was the language barrier. I couldn’t speak english at all. So whenever I had meetings, I always carried a translation app on my phone to help me communicate.
I’m still struggling with that!!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a commercial dancer. Commercial dancers perform alongside artists on stage and appear in television shows, music videos, commercials, and other entertainment productions.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
Just like in a film, every dancer has a specific role to play. While strong dance skills are a fundamental requirement, factors such as gender, ethnicity, height, and overall presence can also influence the type of dancer a project is looking for.
Every project has different needs, and the ideal dancer for one opportunity may not be the right fit for another. I believe that being selected often depends not only on my preparation and abilities, but also on timing and opportunity. When my skills, character, and unique qualities align with what a project is looking for, that is when the right opportunity comes together.
I believe that booking a job happens when preparation meets opportunity. My responsibility is to continue improving my craft and stay ready, so that when the right project comes along, I am able to make the most of that moment.
