Rising Stars: Meet Lindsey Smith of Hurst

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsey Smith

Hi Lindsey, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Fitness and weight training have always been a part of my life, since I can remember. Growing up my dad competed in powerlifting competitions, strength trained various high school football teams, including the Trinity Trojans, and then opened up his own strength training gym for people 40 and over in Bedford. I am a mother of 2 and after having my first baby, I realized how lucky I was to get to work out in a smaller, safe environment and to be able to bring my son with me. Because fitness is one of my passions and I had an opportunity to learn from one of the best, I decided I wanted to create a space for not just other moms, but all women, to come get strong.
After becoming a certified personal trainer, interning under my dad’s watch at his gym, and taking clients there, the next step was to open my own place.
It September of 2023 we opened the doors to Lindsey Kay Fitness, a women’s only strength training gym. We proudly offer free, hands-on childcare to those who need it. It’s led by an amazing, highly qualified instructor who does age-appropriate lessons and activities with them each week. We have no age restrictions for children, and truly have a family feel to our gym.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not always been smooth, opening up a gym right before the holidays was definitely a trying time for us. People aren’t always thinking about their fitness goals around that time of the year and things slowed down a lot. We pushed through, and slowly added more and more of our amazing clients and by mid-January were fully booked. We have since added more time slots and more trainers to accommodate our growing clientele!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We are a women’s only strength training gym that offers personal training in small group settings. We welcome women of all ages and stages of their fitness journeys. We have clients from 20 years old to in their 70’s currently and would love to see that age range grow even more!
I am so proud to offer a safe space for women to come weight train. Typically, weights are something that can be considered intimidating to women to try to learn how to do, especially in a crowded gym setting, surrounded by men. At Lindsey Kay Fitness there’s never any of that. Everyone has their own rack and equipment during the workout, and you’re surrounded by women empowering each other. Our trainers take everything very seriously and move slow at the beginning to teach form and ensure that you can reach your goals while avoiding any injury.

Our childcare is also something that I am extremely proud of. Most gym childcare settings are someone sitting there watching your children to make sure they’re okay. At our gym, they’re learning, doing kids’ yoga, making crafts, singing songs, playing dress up, etc. They’re getting an hour of enrichment while their mom is working out and I truly feel it makes such a difference to keep the kids engaged so that you can have a stress-free session with your trainer!

Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
We are a small, family-owned business, and all the support we have received so far has meant the world to us. I am so grateful to have this opportunity to help other women and moms feel better about themselves, and live life stronger!
