Today we’d like to introduce you to Melva Williams.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
“My story is one of faith, perseverance, and lifelong learning. I have spent more than 35 years as a professional hairstylist and entrepreneur, owning and managing my own salon while serving my community through mentoring and outreach. Ministry has also been a significant part of my life. I am a licensed minister, youth leader, and active servant in my church, where I have a passion for helping people grow spiritually and personally.
Along the way, I faced challenges that tested my resilience, including navigating difficult personal circumstances while continuing to pursue my calling, education, and purpose. Rather than allowing those experiences to define me, I used them as motivation to grow stronger and help others facing their own struggles.
Today, I am pursuing a double major in Social Work and Criminal Justice at the University of Phoenix, maintaining a strong academic record and participating in several honor societies. My goal is to combine my life experience, faith, leadership, and education to advocate for youth, families, and individuals who need support and guidance. Looking back, every season of my life has prepared me for where I am today—serving others, leading with compassion, and continuing to learn and grow so I can make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.”
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, it definitely has not been a smooth road. Like many people, I’ve experienced seasons of hardship, disappointment, and uncertainty. One of the biggest challenges was continuing to pursue my goals while navigating difficult personal circumstances. There were times when I felt overwhelmed by the responsibilities of work, family, ministry, and education all at once. Balancing those commitments required sacrifice, discipline, and a lot of perseverance.
I also faced challenges in a previous marriage affected by alcoholism and mental illness, which tested my emotional strength and faith. During that time, I was working, serving in ministry, and continuing my education, even when the path forward wasn’t always clear. There were moments when giving up would have been easier, but I believed God had a purpose for my life beyond my circumstances.
As a first-generation college student, returning to school later in life came with its own challenges. I had to learn how to navigate higher education while balancing real-life responsibilities. There were long days, late nights, and moments of self-doubt, but each obstacle taught me resilience, patience, and determination.
Looking back, I can honestly say that my struggles helped shape who I am today. They strengthened my faith, deepened my compassion for others, and fueled my desire to serve people who may be facing challenges of their own. The road hasn’t been easy, but every challenge has contributed to my growth and prepared me for the work I feel called to do.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Professionally, I am a hairstylist, entrepreneur, minister, mentor, and college student. I have been in the beauty industry for more than 35 years and have owned and operated my own salon for over 20 years. Throughout my career, I have specialized in healthy hair care, client education, and helping people feel confident about themselves both inside and out.
In addition to being a licensed hairstylist, I am also a Certified Hair Loss Practitioner. This specialty allows me to understand hair from the inside out. I work with clients experiencing hair thinning and hair loss by looking beyond the surface and helping them identify possible contributing factors related to health, nutrition, stress, lifestyle, and hair care practices. I enjoy educating clients and helping them develop solutions that support both hair and overall wellness.
Beyond my professional work, I am a licensed minister and youth leader, and I am currently pursuing a double major in Social Work and Criminal Justice. My passion has always been helping people grow, whether that is through my salon chair, ministry, mentoring, or future advocacy work.
What I am most proud of is my ability to keep growing and serving others through every season of life. After more than three decades in business, I am still learning, still developing, and still finding new ways to make a difference. I am proud of returning to college later in life, maintaining a strong academic record, and being inducted into multiple honor societies while balancing work, family, ministry, and community service.
What sets me apart is that I bring a unique combination of professional expertise, life experience, faith, leadership, and compassion. I understand what it means to overcome challenges, reinvent yourself, and continue moving forward. Whether I am helping a client restore confidence through hair restoration, mentoring a young person, leading in ministry, or preparing for a career in social work, my focus is always the same: helping people recognize their value, discover their potential, and become the best version of themselves.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I don’t believe luck has been the biggest factor in my life or business. I’ve experienced both challenges and blessings, but I see them as opportunities for growth and God’s guidance rather than luck. Some of my toughest seasons taught me resilience, perseverance, and compassion, while supportive mentors, loyal clients, and unexpected opportunities helped me grow personally and professionally. What I’ve learned is that success comes from faith, hard work, preparation, and the willingness to keep moving forward, even when the road is difficult.
