Rising Stars: Meet Michael Gordon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Gordon.

Hi Michael, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
First, I’d like the give thanks to God… I assure you my journey has been watched over by him. My art and tattooing journey actually began in Federal Prison. I was convicted of a non-violent drug trafficking crime. While I can assure you, I’m not proud of my past I certainly embrace it and use it to produce a better tomorrow for myself and the ones around me. I’m not the guy that didn’t have other choices in life. I was raised knowing right from wrong. I for sure take responsibility for my choices and moving forward in my life I just focus on always striving for better and I hope people in my same situation can look at me and know change is possible. After I was released, I began tattooing at shop in Crowley Texas. Shortly after being in the shop environment, I began to realize I preferred a more personal experience with my clients’ versus just picking art off a wall. I was also hoping to create a more spa-like experience versus novelty tattoo shop. So, I decided to open an appointment-only private studio inside The Phenix Salon and Spa here in Fort Worth. It’s been a Blessing to say the least and I believe I have been able to really create a good environment for my clients.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I can’t say it’s been a smooth road but I can say every obstacle placed in front of me I was able to work through. I’ve put in a lot of hours working trying to keep not only appointments booked but my studio clean and inviting. I can say there are some amazing artists in this city. I follow most of them and I can say I’m a fan of their craft for sure and I’m humbled to be tattooing in this city among them but it’s tough sometimes as a standalone artist. I don’t have the walk-in volume like a tattoo shop. I’ve been Blessed and have stayed busy and see a constant influx of new requests. But building that and getting to this point wasn’t always easy.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
As an artist, I’d have to say I’m drawn more to black and gray art. I do commissioned drawings for customers still and prefer to do black and gray tattoos as well. It’s becoming more of what I’m asked to do and what clients seek me out for. I never really use a design off the internet unless a client specifically asks but rather, I take their idea and draw them something that is unique to them. I believe by taking the time to design for my clients it sets me apart from some of the busier walk-in shops. I’d have to say I’m very proud of how far not only my tattooing has come but also my pencil artwork.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
I would like to add that no matter what may be in front of you don’t stop working and believing in yourself. Use your passions in life to help u overcome and succeed. Do not ever allow self-doubt to hold you back…So don’t settle for less than you desire. Be prepared to put in the work and earn it.
