Rising Stars: Meet Rory Conner of Coppell, TX

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rory Conner.

Hi Rory, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I spent ten years in the sales and service industry, where I mastered operational efficiency, high-level organization, and complex problem-solving. These roles fulfilled my systematic and analytical side but left my creative side unexpressed.

I eventually reached a plateau, realizing I was no longer growing and was ready for new challenges. I just wasn’t exactly sure what that next move would be.

I’ve always been passionate about skin, but I never saw myself as an esthetician or dermatologist. I recalled coming across paramedical tattooing years earlier as a solution for my own stretch marks. It wasn’t until a year ago that I seriously considered it as a career path.

When I stopped viewing it as just a service and started seeing it as a profession, it clicked: it was the perfect career for me. It demands creativity, precision, and massive organizational structure, all while allowing me to fulfill my passion for skin and helping others feel more confident.

After realizing there was a training gap in my hometown, I expanded my search and found Elena at Illusions by Ink Studio in Dallas. Her work instantly resonated with my high standards. The training was a perfect fit, and when she offered me a position, I accepted immediately.

I left Indiana and moved to Dallas two weeks later, and I’ve been learning and loving every moment since.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The journey has been incredibly rewarding, and I would say fairly smooth. I owe all of that to my mentor, Elena.

If I had to describe a big challenge to a new artist coming into the industry, It would be the level of drive and continuous effort you need to have in order to build up a consistent book of clients.

I’m very fortunate to have the strong platform and support provided by Elena and the studio, which has allowed me to grow my clientele much faster than I could have alone. I definitely recognize the hustle required if I were operating independently.

When the client flow naturally slows, I don’t see it as downtime. Instead, I maximize that period for development and business support. I prioritize sitting in on Elena’s appointments to absorb advanced artistry and technique, and I proactively assist with critical operational tasks such as client scheduling, maintaining studio cleanliness, and supply organization.

This allows me to contribute to the studio’s success in multiple ways while constantly deepening my overall business knowledge.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a Paramedical Tattoo Artist at the Illusions by Ink Studio in Coppell, Texas.

My expertise lies in the highly specialized process of custom-blending pigmented inks to effectively camouflage or conceal various skin imperfections, including scars and stretch marks.

Since beginning this career, I have worked with a diverse range of skin types and conditions, treating scars resulting from surgery, dermatology, burns, and conditions like vitiligo.

My most rewarding work involves surgical scars, particularly those resulting from significant weight loss where clients have had excess skin removed. These are often long, extensive scars spanning the arms, legs, and torso.

These cases are incredibly fulfilling because they represent the final step in a client’s long health journey. After dedicating themselves to transformative weight loss, they are often left with loose skin or scars (if they surgically remove the excess skin)—a physical reminder exchanged for a healthier life.

The ability to camouflage these marks provides the ultimate sense of completion, helping them feel confident and whole in their skin.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up, I was quite reserved, often the quiet kid in the back. I preferred independent and creative outlets, especially art. I always looked forward to art class and would often be found drawing in my notebooks at lunch or
during less-interesting classes.

Despite my quiet nature, I was highly athletic and a strong team player. I participated in basketball, volleyball, cheerleading, and dance. My favorite sport was basketball, which I played for twelve years. Being taller than most of my classmates for a long time certainly gave me an advantage on the court, coupled with a strong work ethic and a genuine passion for the sport.
