Today we’d like to introduce you to Sophia Macias Gomez.
Hi Sophia, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My creative journey began when I was 16 years old and discovered a passion for makeup artistry. What started as a hobby quickly became something I genuinely loved, and over the years I continued developing my skills, working with clients, and building my confidence as an artist.
I was born in Brownsville, Texas, and raised in Matamoros, Mexico, before eventually moving to the Dallas-Fort Worth area in 2020. Starting over in a new city pushed me to continue pursuing my creative interests and seek new opportunities for growth.
In 2021, I expanded into photography and plus-size modeling, both of which allowed me to express my creativity in new ways. More recently, I’ve also enjoyed creating lifestyle, beauty, travel, and local experience content on social media, which has given me another outlet to share my passions and connect with others.
Today, I continue balancing my full-time career while growing as a makeup artist, photographer, model, and content creator. I’m still building toward my goal of one day working in the creative industry full-time, and I’m grateful for every client, collaboration, and opportunity that helps me get one step closer.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a completely smooth road. One of the biggest challenges has been balancing my creative pursuits with a full-time career. Like many creatives, I’ve had to learn how to build my passions during evenings, weekends, and any free time I could find while managing other responsibilities.
Another challenge was moving to the Dallas-Fort Worth area in 2020 and essentially starting over. Building connections, finding opportunities, and establishing yourself in a new community takes time, patience, and persistence.
As a plus-size model, I’ve also had moments where I questioned whether there was space for me in certain creative industries. Over time, I’ve learned that representation matters and that confidence comes from embracing who you are rather than trying to fit into someone else’s expectations.
I’ve also faced the same struggles many creatives experience—self-doubt, slow seasons, projects that didn’t work out, and opportunities that never materialized. However, each challenge has taught me something valuable and pushed me to keep going. Looking back, I think those obstacles have helped me grow not only as a creative professional but also as a person.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I consider myself a multidisciplinary creative. My work spans makeup artistry, photography, plus-size modeling, and lifestyle content creation, all of which allow me to express creativity in different ways while connecting with people and telling stories.
As a makeup artist, I specialize in enhancing natural beauty and creating looks that help people feel confident and comfortable in their own skin. Through photography, I enjoy capturing meaningful moments while also helping people see themselves in a new light. Some of my favorite moments are when clients leave a session feeling more confident, empowered, and comfortable in front of the camera than they did when they arrived.
As a plus-size model, I’ve had opportunities to work with brands, publications, and creative projects that promote representation and inclusivity. Through content creation, I share beauty, travel, local experiences, and everyday moments that inspire me while connecting with others who share similar interests.
What I’m most proud of is that I’ve continued building these creative passions over the years while balancing a full-time career. Every client, photoshoot, collaboration, publication, and creative opportunity has been something I’ve worked hard to achieve. Along the way, I’ve also had the opportunity to be published in multiple fashion and lifestyle magazines worldwide and featured on the cover of two magazines as a plus-size model, which has been one of the highlights of my creative journey. While I haven’t transitioned into the creative industry full-time yet, I’m proud of the foundation I’ve built and the growth I’ve experienced along the way.
I think what sets me apart is my ability to understand the creative process from multiple perspectives. I’ve been behind the camera as a photographer, behind the makeup chair as an artist, and in front of the camera as a model and content creator. Beyond the creative work itself, I also manage many of the behind-the-scenes aspects of my brands, including social media, marketing, graphic design, client communication, and business operations. Wearing so many different hats has given me a well-rounded perspective and a deeper appreciation for everything that goes into building a creative business.
At the heart of everything I do is the desire to help people feel seen, confident, and celebrated. Whether through makeup, photography, modeling, or content creation, that’s the impact I hope to leave on others.
What does success mean to you?
For me, success isn’t defined by a job title, follower count, or a specific income level. While those achievements can be rewarding, I believe success is about building a life that feels meaningful and aligned with who you are.
Success means having the freedom to do work I genuinely enjoy, continuing to grow creatively, and making a positive impact on the people I work with. It’s seeing a makeup client leave feeling confident, watching someone light up when they receive their photos, or creating content that resonates with others.
I also define success by balance. Having a fulfilling career is important to me, but so are my relationships, my family, my health, and the experiences I get to share with the people I love. At the end of the day, I want to look back and know that I pursued my passions, stayed true to myself, and made a difference in the lives of others.
I think success is less about reaching a final destination and more about continuing to grow, learn, and enjoy the journey along the way.
