Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Burleson
Hi Stephanie, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
For as long as I can remember, art has been a huge part of my life. Fashion is one element of art that I can express myself through from designing to sewing each piece. It’s very healing in nature and also creates a space for me to help others express their personal style.
My grandmother was a gifted seamstress and I remember watching her sew many beautiful designs. She had a God-given talent and it was truly an eye opening experience to watch her work in her gift.
She started teaching me to sew a few months before she passed away. I decided to keep her legacy going and created So Like You in her honor.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I can’t say it has always been silky smooth.. Juggling being a Professor, caring for my family and keeping up with the planning for many other organizations is a constant challenge. However, like in most cases when I am faced with a challenge, I find a way to keep things moving through the grace of God. When you walk in your purpose, things always come together.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
So Like You is a clothing brand that caters to each individual’s personality. I design and sew my own pieces while working with my clients to ensure they are happy with the final look. I originally started with only making skirts, but I have branched out into children’s clothing, women’s separates, and semi formal wear.
I am most proud of finally producing my first fashion show last month. Respect My Art – Showcase & Tribute was a sold out success where we paid tribute to models, designers, artists and the late J Dilla.
I think that my love for the arts and unwavering drive to keep learning new skills sets me apart from others. I may be a Professor by profession, but I am forever a student of Art.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
My app calendar is my lifeline. It also helps me to become more productive especially when my days are filled with many tasks that demand my attention.
