Today we’d like to introduce you to Tearra Salter.
Hi Tearra, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I earned my Bachelor of Science in Nursing from The University of Texas at Austin in 2012 and began my career serving patients across acute care, primary care, and home healthcare settings. Driven by a desire to expand my impact, I went on to complete my Master of Science in Nursing at The University of Texas at Arlington in 2018, specializing as a Family Nurse Practitioner.
Since becoming licensed as an FNP, I have worked exclusively as a house-call primary care provider. Through this work, I discovered a deep passion for caring for the elderly—a population that often requires more time, attention, and compassion. Transitioning from fast-paced hospital environments to caring for patients in their own homes transformed the way I practice medicine. It allows me to build genuine relationships, better understand each patient’s health conditions and support system, and create more thoughtful, personalized treatment plans. At heart, I am a people-centered caregiver, and providing care in the home allows me to practice in a way that aligns fully with who I am.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One of my greatest challenges was building confidence in my treatment plans early in my career. As a Family Nurse Practitioner, you’re often expected to step into practice fully prepared the moment you pass your boards, without the kind of on-the-job training many other professions receive. Starting out in a house-call setting meant learning independently, in patients’ homes, and trusting my clinical judgment from day one. Naturally reserved by nature, I had to find my voice and grow into a provider my patients could trust. What made that growth possible was the support and encouragement I received from the very people I cared for—they believed in me as much as I believed in them, and that mutual trust helped shape the clinician I am today.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I take great pride in my professionalism and the standards I bring to my work. I am punctual, dependable, and decisive, ensuring medications are prescribed promptly and orders are completed without delay. I hold myself accountable and avoid making excuses, believing consistency and reliability are essential to patient trust. Above all, I approach every patient without judgment and strive to bring a calm, positive energy into each interaction, creating an environment where patients feel respected, supported, and heard.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
One thing most people don’t know about me is that my commitment to health began with my own personal wake-up call. At one point, I was struggling with elevated cholesterol, early hypertension, and limited stamina. That experience inspired me to take ownership of my well-being and begin a fitness journey—one that led me to work out consistently for the first time in my life. I poured that renewed energy into my family as well, and today I’m the proud parent of boy-girl twins who are All-American youth track athletes. That transformation has deepened my passion for helping others improve their health and change their lives for the better.
