Today we’d like to introduce you to The Roommates.
Hi The Roommates, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Back in 2016, Mallory and Lonnie were playing shows at dive bars and playing covers at the time. You know, the top 100 songs that were a hit at the time, and someone thought Lonnie was Jesse! Haha. This led to Jesse reaching out to us to play the breaks of the band they were part of at the time, called Radio Love Bus. This also led to us meeting Marisa, as she was the drummer for the band. As time went on, Jesse ended up joining us to play the dive bar shows we were only playing at the time. After a while, we knew there was something special between us 3. As we were getting burnt out playing covers, we were ready to start creating our own music. Mallory, being such a talented songwriter that she is, was already working on writing her own music. It was presented to Lonnie and Jesse at one of the cover shows, and the feedback we got from that was it for us! It lit a spark that we knew we couldn’t put out anytime soon. Shortly after, we had a little jam session with Marisa, and that was it. It then led to all 4 of us getting together and jamming out, and little did we know the rest was going to be history. We were asked not long after jamming for the first time together if we wanted to play a show with some other upcoming bands. This led us to saying yes to play a show as a whole band with only 2 weeks to prepare for, at what ended up being our favorite venue, The Curtain Club, and that was possibly the best decision we could’ve made by saying yes to that. From there on, we have been honored to play with many bands that mean a lot to us, Dallas Pride for 4+ years, got to be in a movie called “Gloria in te Domine”, and go on tour two times, with one of those having us as the headliners. The connections we have made over the last 8 years have led us to meet some amazing people and musicians on this journey, and we’re thankful for everybody we have interacted with! As we have released a few songs over the years, we’re excited to be dropping our first EP this year, which has some new songs on it to take the listener on a journey with us, as each song tells a story.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Internally, we would say it has been a smooth road for us! The band has been a rock for each of us, to keep one another lifted up. As we’ve all been through life changes in the last 8 years, for us, a big part of not falling apart is the love we have for each other. We’ve each become family over the years.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
We are a Dallas-based, all-female indie rock band that burst into the music scene in late 2017. We’re a heavy-hitting quartet that leaves nothing on the table, combining powerful vocals and airy guitar solos with emotional and dark undertones, serving the listener a strong dose of tour de force. We believe that music is its own language and emotion, but more so a form of essential life therapy that we have opened up and shared with our listeners. We’re most proud of the culture we have built around us, and the ability to be free from any issues in this world, the second we get together and play music. Our ability to have different variations of us being creative by everyone jumping on different instruments creates so many doors for us to explore while we’re creating.
What matters most to you? Why?
As a whole, just getting to be vulnerable with what we create when it’s just the four of us, and we finally share it with the world, is something that gives us life. As artists, anything we share with people to hear, that is a part of us that we’re exposing for the world to see. Like you’re taking a look into our soul. As we know, our music may not be everyone’s cup of tea. But for us, it’s knowing we put a piece of us out there, and it is something that will be a mark left in this world, even when we’re not here anymore.
