Rising Stars: Meet Zakyla Dickerson

Today we’re excited to be connecting with Zakyla Dickerson again. If you haven’t already, we suggest you check out our prior conversation with them here.

Zakyla, thanks for joining us again. Just to level set a bit for folks who may have missed our last interview together, can you briefly introduce yourself?
Hi! I’m Zakyla the Crocheter! I’m a fiber artist from Dallas, TX. I am a former public school educator and now I have the pleasure to teach crochet in the Dallas area! I’m a self taught crocheter and I’ve been crocheting for almost a decade. In November of 2022 I began working at Knit Dallas, a local yarn store, and in February of 2023 I taught my very first official crochet class! I’ve worked hard to perfect my skills and in May of 2024 I published my first crochet pattern!

My brand and style are all about making your Art Fit! I believe that we are all created to create and there is an art-form for everyone. I want to encourage and inspire the world to find the art that fits them! Crochet is art and I love to wear it. I love to teach it. I’m proud to be a young person doing grandma things!

Awesome, so we reached out because we wanted to hear all about what you have been up to since we last connected.
Back in 2020 I was able to focus on creating my own designs and last year I was able to see one come to life! Writing a good crochet pattern takes time and patience and also a little help from the community. I had amazing pattern testers who took time out of their lives to help me work through the kinks in my pattern. I’ve been able to grow a crochet community here in Dallas and I’m so excited every time I get to talk all things yarn and hooks.

I’ve started a blog and a YouTube channel so that I can and share my crafty journey. I’ve become a bit of a yarn snob and I’m proud of it. You can read my blog at doesyourartfit.com and find my channel – Does Your Art Fit?

I’ve participated in pop up shops and local markets across the DFW and was even featured in the Dallas Morning News! I left my career of public school teaching in 2023. I often feel the pressure of being a full time artist but the joy of doing what I love everyday makes it all worth it. My goal now is to teach crochet and share my designs all over the world!

We also want to give folks a chance to get to know you a bit better so we’ve prepared a fun lightning round of questions. Ready?

I know that I’ve impacted the lives of others in a very positive way. I love all the children I’ve taught and who are still connected with me to this day. The hardships that have come my way did not take me out and through the pain I was made stronger. I’m shining and my voice is strong. I speak my mind and lead with love. God has been very good to me!
