Meet Corey Zackery of Saginaw Surplus in Fort Worth

Today we’d like to introduce you to Corey Zackery.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Saginaw Surplus has been in business for about 5 years. We only sell one thing, residential doors. Our mission is pretty simple: We want to improve every project we’re a part of and, by extension, improve our community. And that’s really how we see it. Whether our customer is a homeowner who finally decides to replace her front door after 30 years or a builder with 30 years’ experience, we want to be part of the project. I love to see before and after pictures and think we had a part in helping them select a door that fits their style. Being a part of the community also means that we understand our customers, because they’re our neighbors.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Retail is never easy. We are constantly trying to exceed customer expectations and deliver on-time. Unfortunately, there are a lot of factors that are simply out of our control. In the past year we’ve worked with our suppliers and manufacturer to get more reliable delivery schedules. We also have worked really hard to improve our communication with each customer and give them status updates along the way. Training our sales team to give accurate information and think from the customer’s perspective has really improved our customer experience. Another challenge is that our store just isn’t big enough to stock all the doors we offer on our website. But we’ve been listening to our customers and adjusting what we keep in stock to provide better service.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Saginaw Surplus – what should we know?
We specialize in savings! Although “Surplus” is in the name, all the doors we sell are brand new and well-built.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Integrity. We’re really focused on keeping our word to the customer, being upfront and honest, and treating each customer with respect and kindness.
