Meet Cori Boyd of Good News Baked Goods in Austin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cori Boyd.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Cori. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I have loved baking since I was a kid. I remember getting cake pans for Christmas and birthdays. But it wasn’t until I was sixteen and started taking culinary classes at my community college that I was certain I wanted to start a bakery and I wanted it to have healthier options. Around fifteen I had started learning more about reading ingredient labels and what goes into our food and I rejected the notion that for something to be healthy it also had to taste bad. So that is one half of the “Good News” of my bakery. All my products are made with organic and fair trade ingredients.

The other half started the Spring of 2018. I was preparing for my second evangelistic international mission trip and decided to sell some of my famous blondies to raise money for the trip. The process of costing, baking, packaging, and marketing the bars filled me with a sense of “I can do this. I do have a gift and a specific set of skills and what comes easily to me doesn’t come easily to everyone”. So from there this specific dream of having a bakery that both offers healthier options and can be used to support missions (my own and others) was born. Today I run Good News Baked Goods from my home while I am learning how to start and grow a business from scratch.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Starting Good News Baked Goods has been a learning curve. There have been many times where I have said yes to a project and then realized midway through “I should not have agreed to this. Why did I say yes to this?” And revising policies, etc. afterward. Learning how to market myself and utilize social media effectively is another area where I still have room to grow.

The biggest obstacle to my business, however, has been myself. I have had to work through the fear of the unknown and the fear of failure. And it’s an ongoing process as I try to train myself to do the next step and the next and not get frozen trying to do ten steps at once or know all the answers.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Good News Baked Goods specializes in delicious treats made with organic and fair trade ingredients. Everything is made from scratch in small batches and baked with love and it shows. The most popular items we sell are either our chocolate cake, described as “the best cake I’ve ever had” by one guest, or our blondies, which according to some “taste like heaven”. We also have a new line of Paleo cookies which are gluten free, grain free, and dairy free, but you wouldn’t know it when you have a bite of the chocolate chip.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up I was LOUD. I loved singing, acting, playing imaginary games with friends. I would also get very passionate about anything I was interested in, whether that be a book series, a new movie, or whatever I had learned in science class that week. But I would let you know about it with great fervor. I also let you know with equal fervor when I was unhappy about things. Haha.

I was homeschooled pre k through high school which afforded me lots of time flexibility to read or bake when I had finished my school work and chores, so I was often in the kitchen, singing and baking. I also loved spending time with friends whenever possible.
