Meet Jerrell Trulove

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jerrell Trulove.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Jerrell. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
The story of how I got started is rather simple. It was 2011 and I was working in the oil field as an equipment operator, a job I thoroughly despised. I’ve always been a creative person whether it be taking photos at holiday get together’s or drawing comics for the high school newspaper and one night I told myself that I needed to find a new creative outlet to occupy my free time so I don’t get stuck in the familiar cycle of going to work and coming home. The lightbulb went off when I realized that I’ve always enjoyed taking photos and then a very simple thought popped in my head that I’ll never forget. “Hey, I should become a photographer.” I bought my first camera six weeks later and that was the beginning.

I started off photographing any and everything, like most photographers, do. After shooting mostly free work for about five years I decided to focus on wedding photography almost exclusively and it’s been nothing but a blessing ever since. Photography really has been my saving grace.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Anyone will tell you that embarking on any creative endeavor will never and can never be an easy thing. The hardest part about being a photographer is finding your own voice and style in such a crowded marketplace. When just starting out, we see other photographers that we aspire to be like and we begin to emulate them. However, this can be the thing that keeps us from becoming who we were meant to be because we filter every decision we make through the lens of ‘it doesn’t look like so-and-so’s work.’

The best thing I ever did was stop comparing myself to others and focus on what I like to do, how I like to capture things and what makes sense to me. That was what truly allowed me to enjoy my craft more and settle into who I am with confidence.

Tell us more about the business.
Jerrell Trulove Photography focuses on vibrant images that tell the true story of any wedding or event. I specialize in making people feel comfortable and confident in front of the camera regardless of where they are or what they’re doing. I’m known for being the coolest guy in the room and surprising couples with wedding highlight slideshows that they can watch on their wedding day during the reception.

What I’m proud of the most is just how far I’ve accomplished in a few short years. Since 2016 I’ve traveled to three different countries, photographed over 70 weddings in five different states and have been named one of the top 12 best wedding photographers in two different cities. All I can say is that God is good all the time.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t believe in luck. God has proven to me time and time again that if you sit around hoping for success, absolutely nothing will happen. It’s only when we take decided, calculated action and move on our ideas, intuitions and gut feelings that we uncover those ‘lucky’ opportunities. Take action and you will win. Stay still and you will lose every time.
