Meet Wendy Misfeldt of Ken’s Custom Frames in Fort Worth

Today we’d like to introduce you to Wendy Misfeldt.

Wendy, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My dad, Ken Post, opened Ken’s Custom Frames in 1969. He was unhappy with his job and looking for something else to do. My uncle had a successful custom framing business in Richardson and offered to teach my dad. My dad is really amazing and built a really successful business from the ground up. He learned everything and 48 years later here we are! He is really an inspiration. I hope I can continue the legacy that he started. In 2015, he decided that he wanted to retire and asked me if I wanted to take over management of the store. I agreed to. It hasn’t been easy but with the strong foundation that he built we are continuing to succeed. I have been managing the store since August 2015. I have two employees: Robert Rodriguez who has been with the store since 1986! And Krista Brill who joined us in 2015. I have tried to maintain the level of customer service and quality that I feel sets us apart since I started. I have made a few changes though. We have changed the look of our showroom and updated our logo (we are slowly incorporating those changes throughout the store). We are implementing the use of more technology in our operations and implementing the use of social media in our marketing.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Being a small, locally owned business is tough sometimes. We have to compete with big box stores who aggressively advertise and offer big discounts. We’ve compared our prices to theirs and often our prices beat theirs even with the discounts. We have our loyal customer base but we do struggle to bring in new, younger buyers.

Please tell us about Ken’s Custom Frames.
We specialize in custom framing and pride ourselves on exceptional customer service and superior quality. We have a very large selection of moldings and mats. We are able to do basic framing and very complicated specialty designs. We work with designers and do larger commercial and corporate jobs as well.

We are very well known for our shadow box designs. We also do a lot of sports memorabilia framing. We regularly have customers who have been to a big box store down the street referred to us because their design is too complicated. 🙂 We rarely say we can’t do something. We will do whatever we can to try to give the customer exactly what they envision. We are also able to take something that a customer is completely unsure what to do with a create a gorgeous design with it.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Swimming in the creek with my grandma and my dad (my dad’s mom) in South Texas.
