Meet Maggy Doherty of Doherty Nutrition in North Dallas/Addison

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maggy Doherty.

Maggy, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I am a Registered Dietitian from Dallas, Texas who is infatuated with all things food. After competing as a UCLA student-athlete on the Women’s Diving team and experiencing multiple injuries during my athletic career, I learned how to use food to take my health and performance to the next level. After earning my Master of Science in Nutrition at the University of Illinois at Chicago and practicing as a clinical dietitian at Dallas’ Parkland Hospital, I am now the proud founder of my own nutrition counseling and consulting private practice- Doherty Nutrition LLC.

When I’m not “working,” you’ll find me hiking in the backcountry, searching for the world’s greatest brussels sprouts recipe, and mixing up an old fashioned.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
As a single-member LLC and business owner, I am a one-stop-shop and wear multiple hats… From dietitian to accountant, insurance biller, social media manager, marketing director, and business owner!

I definitely have acquired a few gray hairs and wrinkles from waiting on hold with insurance companies and attempting to analyze my financial books. But, learning how to check my patient’s health benefits and use Quickbooks has been a HUGE and motivational learning curve.

It can be quite overwhelming at times knowing that I am solely responsible for all things in my business, however, I do find a huge sense of accomplishment (and growth of parts of my brain that I haven’t used in years) when I get these major tasks accomplished all on my one!

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Doherty Nutrition story. Tell us more about it.
We believe that knowledge of good nutrition can lead to better lives, stronger athletes, and more prosperous businesses. Our mission is to help people reach their health and performance goals through simplifying nutrition.

Doherty Nutrition provides simple, realistic, and fun nutrition counseling and consulting services to help you reach your health and performance goals. We specialize in medical nutrition therapy, sports nutrition, nutrition education, and nutrition communications.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I believe my passion and perseverance has played a bigger role, rather than luck, in my business success. Although I am “lucky” to have a strong network-a husband who is a senior manager and lends me wonderful business advice, a father who is a retired doctor and navigates me through difficult medical situations, a brother who is a talented website designer and made my amazing website, and my network of dietitian colleagues who help answer all of my nutrition-related questions.

My bad luck is that I want to accomplish so many things at once, so I tend to overpack my days and when I don’t accomplish the 721 tasks, then I feel like I didn’t do enough… so, I’m learning how to manage my time, prioritize my to-do list, and make the most of my days while starting out my business!
