Today we’d like to introduce you to Nathan and Sharon Brewer, founder and owners of the The Texas Tar Heels AAU Select Basketball Academy.
Nathan and Sharon, can you briefly walk us through your story – how did the Texas Tar Heels get started?
In 2003, we began a winning track record with just one team of first-graders. We have devoted the past 17 years to building up our players both on and off the court. Our select basketball program is known as one of the most respected and successful sports organizations in the North Texas region. Our success on and off the court has attracted new players and we have grown from just one team to three, and then five! We currently have 25 teams here in the DFW area and have recently expanded our program to include four teams in West Texas!
To what to you attribute our success to?
There is a lot of competition in youth sports. What sets us apart is that we offer a structured program with a focus on player development. Parents have come to us after years with other programs and reported more development in just one season with The Texas Tar Heels. We care about the kids and sincerely want to support them in reaching their athletic goals.
Our emphasis is on player development, team-first style of play and dedicated coaching staff. Our program has a strong focus on rock-solid fundamentals. We work with each player to maximize their potential and teach the importance of integrity, the value of hard work, and respect for others. As a Christian based organization, we welcome players of all religious beliefs as well as non believers. At the end of every practice and game, we have one player volunteer to join the team together in prayer.
Sounds like your passion is helping kids both on the court and off it. What accomplishments are you most proud of?
On the court, we look to create opportunities for exposure to college coaches
More than 80% of our high school players have gone on to play college ball. Our alumni include several DI, D2, & D3, professional overseas, NBA, and several pending NBA hopefuls!
We are equally as proud of some of our alumni who have gone on to pursue careers outside of basketball, such as chemical engineering, neuroscience, and even a 2K gaming professional for the Utah Jazz!
Sounds like you have been able to pursue your passion – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that doing so is not always easy. Overall, what has your experience been like?
Youth sports can be a tough business. We have devoted ourselves to developing players so they can successfully compete and have had sponsored teams aggressively work to recruit our players. We continue to focus on doing what’s right and work with our players to reach their goals; however, we are now also working to attract both individuals and corporations who would like to sponsors players so we can retain these athletes. The Texas Tar Heels is a non-profit organization (501c3) so donations to our scholarship fund are tax-deductible.
What in the future for the Texas Tar Heels Basketball Academy?
In 2017, we expanded to offer developmental teams and are now the fastest-growing independent AAU Select Basketball Program in the DFW area. Our players come to the Texas Tar Heels to work hard, develop their skills and gain exposure to college coaches. We offer state of the art training with Vertimax, a shooting machine and unique training drills. Our proven track record of developing players to reach their maximum potential
