Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Earls.
Jason, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
Since elementary School, I’ve had an instinctive nudge/sense to understand when things were tensed or when people needed to smile. I remember in 1st grade making it my goal to make the mean cafeteria lady smile, talk nicer, and give us free 2nds. One day in Jr. High School, it randomly hit me, after making a classmate laugh, that I was freaking funny! I knew I wasn’t the smartest nor most athletic, but one thing that stood out to me (and others) was that Jason Earls could not only put a smile on your face but a laugh in your gut. As I got older not only did this ability remain consistent, but it increased. I realized later that it wasn’t just an ability, but a gift. A gift to make the world a better place by helping others smile and laugh.
What blows me away is that I get to do this and take care of my bride of 17 years and our 6 kids. Yes, you read it right. Half. A. Dozen. Their names are Aaron, Alex, Alicia, Andrew, Achim, and Aniyah. That’s my 1st time making straight A’s. My goal for them is to model for them what it looks like to, not just follow, but to live out their dreams. So, I include them as much as I can. I get to take comedy and encouragement in some pretty cool places, and I try to take them to expose the world to them. When I went to Nicaragua last year, my wife &I took my 8-year-old. A few months ago, I went to Cape Town, and I took my 14-year-old daughter. Last week I went to a prison…my youngest 2 cried thinking I was going away for a long time.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I’m a Stand-Up Comedian that tells jokes and create content to inspire the folks. I believe that part of my existence on this earth is to help people to understand and experience the laughs and joy available to us and inspire others to live the life we were intended to live. I always saw, “I don’t live to make people, I make people laugh to help them live.
My uncle, a rocket scientist who ran 1 of the 6 NASA centers, always says, “God didn’t give everybody everything, but he gave everybody something.” Comedy is part of something. So, I want people to be inspired by my something enjoy life and enjoy with others especially families.
When my son was 9, I asked him did he know how to find a wife. He responded, “Yeah, Dad. I’ll Google her.” Laughing, I quickly realized his generation doesn’t have love songs like we did. Think about it. Love songs in the 80’s & prior taught us how to look for and find love. These songs gave the entire family good times enjoying one another singing and talking about relationship. My boy and our technology crazed era has missed out, so I decide to write a love song that he and his friends could jam to using tech language, and that my friend & our parents could jam to. It’s called, I’ve Been Googling’.
In your view, what is the biggest issue artists have to deal with?
The greatest hurdle I’ve faced in the 17 years I’ve been doing stand-up is an invisible one with an invisible black hole called, atelophobia (the fear of not good enough or imperfection). Nothing, and I mean nothing, has been more self-sabotaging and parlaying hindering my art and the impact to have with others, than this subtle the idea that my work won’t be good enough for others to enjoy and tell others about. And the intestinal fortitude that it takes to tell that personal demon to get off your back is hardier than a no handed man thumb wrestling.
What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
If you want to see me locally, I’m starting a comedy event next month in Wylie called The Wylie Comedy Night and will soon start an open mic to help others discover and work on their comedy craft. Until then, we may bump into each other in DFW airport, some of the local comedy events, of just “Google Me.” You’ll find me at all things Jason earls (jasonearls.com or @jasosnearls). I’ve got my parody “I’ve Been Goolin’ on all your digital music outlets.
