Art & Life with Sarah Ciesla

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Ciesla.

Sarah, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
Growing up as a kid I always had an interest in artistic, fashion and design elements. I was an avid Barbie and Lego fan growing up, playing with toys well beyond age what would be for a typical child. Legos time with friends I was always the town and house designer making creations from the blocks. And Barbies dream home was constantly getting a makeover with whatever I could find around our house to change the look – re-wallpapering the walls or creating new furnishings (out of tissue boxes and scrap fabrics. Barbies wardrobe was also constantly changing and getting the newest season looks from tissues and scrap fabrics I could find. I also loved playing dress up and Halloween was my favorite holiday, creating costumes from items I could find around our house. The passion continued into school (drafting classes in HS filled with all boys) and college where I pursed an interior design degree from the University of Texas at Austin.

My love of design continues but I have always been enamored with fashion. Frequently stopped out and about inquiring or complimenting by ensemble and especially my shoes (I can think if many times in HEB other shoppers stopping to compliment my shoes and how fun they were to liven up a grocery store visit). A friend who was getting into photography and wanted to practice used me and my shoes as subject matter and I fell in love with documenting shoes in different settings. She wanted to practice facial and other elements and I really wanted to get more shoe shots so I decided to embark on taking my own photos.

It’s been a learning curve as about 98% of the photos I take myself using an iPhone, tripod and an iWatch to remotely snap the photos. In between the ones that are posted there are some pretty funny “outtakes” I own my own interior design firm and while based in Austin I frequently travel all over Texas allowing me to explore the fun and beauty in all of our Texas cities.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
Shoe photos! I love the art of shoe design and love combining the shoe with an architectural or artistic backdrop that compliments the shoe and the surroundings.

How do you think about success, as an artist, and what do quality do you feel is most helpful?
When I capture a shoe shot that in my gut is a good shot – from the outfit and surrounding scenery and getting the lighting just right to create that perfect shot. I definitely get a rush / high when I see how some of my shots look
