Check out Janicka A. Arthur

Today we’d like to introduce you to Janicka A. Arthur.

Janicka, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
My journey began at the ETA Cultural Center on the Southside of Chicago. After finding my passion for dance, I continued my education by attending the only independent art high school in Illinois, The Chicago Academy for the Arts under the direction of Anna Paskevska and Randy Duncan. Over the years, I became well versed in Ballet, Modern, Jazz, and West African Dance receiving additional training from the Ailey School, Ballet Chicago, Deeply Rooted Productions, and Jeraldyne’s School of Dance. In 2008, I received a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Dance Performance from Southern Methodist University where I performed many works including the reconstruction of Martha Graham’s “Panorama” and Agnes De Mille’s “The Four Marys.” After graduation, I headed directly into the corporate world and didn’t know how I’d ever get back to my first love, dance.

But in divine order, my college roommate (whom I hadn’t spoken to in years) requested that I substitute her weekend classes at the School of Contemporary Ballet Dallas. That summer, she relocated, and I took on the responsibility in formulating classes that would inspire adult students to grow in mind, body, and spirit. It has been over eight years since I answered that “call” and I am honored to continue the journey in transforming lives one step at a time.

We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I am an Entrepreneur, Choreographer, and Movement Strategist. I create a safe place for adults to explore their bodies, challenge themselves physically, and enhance their overall health while learning ballet. My signature method allows students to leave mediocrity behind, build solid foundations, and reach their highest potential.

The key take away from my classes is that growth happens outside of your comfort zone and with enough patience, time, and effort anything is possible.

How can artists connect with other artists?
Dallas is full of creatives that are passionate and excited to collaborate. My advice in connecting with other artists is to step outside of your comfort zone, attend local events, and become members of artistic, social media platforms.

Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
