Conversations with the Inspiring Monica Wilcox

Today we’d like to introduce you to Monica Wilcox.

It all started with her mom not letting her rearrange the living room.
The oldest of eight siblings, Monica grew up a military “brat,” spending her childhood in several different countries, including Japan. Monica’s mother, a naturally gifted interior designer, relished creating a beautiful home for her family and always changing it up to keep it fresh with new furniture lay-outs, pillows, rugs and more. Young Monica loved to rearrange and move things, hang her own hand-drawn artwork, and bring her personal design aesthetic to life. Frustrated by her daughter, Monica’s mom issued an edict, “Do not decorate my home; when you have your own home, you can decorate your home the way you want it.”

And so she did. But Monica did not just stop at her home. In years to come, Monica would have clients lined up for the very same service her mother fussed about. Monica opened her own firm in 2008, with 2 assistants and small studio space, 11 years later, Monica has created a full-service design firm with a staff of 10. She has now become an award-winning interior designer and TV personality, this 20-year veteran and celebrity guest speaker, has appeared as a lifestyle expert on WFAA and Fox Networks. She has been featured in various publications such as; Dallas Style & Design, Plano Profile, and Home Magazine. Monica is the President of her Dallas based firm, M. Wilcox Design with a team of talented leading designers. Her diverse design portfolio includes; Hospitality, residential, set design, commercial & medical facilities. M Wilcox Design is known for delivering unique designs with functionality that are modern, yet classic interiors. Monica’s unmistakable design sensibility has earned her several awards including, Best of- Interior Design, Top 20 Interior Designers, Best Design Exhibit, and Prism Award Winner. She is currently starring in a new reality design competition show on the Bravo Network. show less

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
This Journey has definitely not been an easy one, there were many times I wanted to give up, mostly because I didn’t have the foundation of my business set up correctly and as the business thrived my business organization and systems failed. I had to go back and start again from the beginning really focusing on building a well organized system to run my business which included implementing a design software program to track my client projects, hiring key personnel to take care of the tasks that I was weak at, and having all my contracts reviewed by attorneys to protect myself and my firm. I had to learn the hard way, but I’m glad I went through that, as I have definitely learned what not to do. So, my best advice would be before you even think about taking on your first client, get your procedural operations down!

As a brand, we are most proud of our giving back to the new and upcoming designers, we currently run an online school called Designmeccaedu.com, where we teach designers education beyond the classroom, and whats its really like to run a design business.

Whats sets us apart from other design firms, is that we are truly turn-key offering a luxury service that clients love and we are truly about collaboration with our clients, even though we take care of all the details, we definitely want their voice to be heard and reflected in there personal home.

Who do you look up to? How have they inspired you?
I actually look up to a lot of different women, but some of my favorites are Tobi Fairley and Kelly Hoppen, and Kelly Wearstler. I love how they have diversified their brand into different revenue streams in the design industry, they have truly found whats works for them, I love the ability to take chances and their confidence in knowing who they are as designers and what their contribution will be to the design world.
