Life and Work with Jodi James

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jodi James.

Jodi, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Growing up in Arkansas, I knew early on I wanted to be in a city and environment where I could pursue and expand my goals as a hair and makeup artist. That’s why I chose Dallas and it has been good to me. I attended a Paul Mitchell school and then completed a year-long apprentice program before building my own clientele here at Chad Rookstool Salon which is located in Victory Park.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I would say the most challenging time in my career was being an assistant and going thru the additional training it took to be “on the floor”. It’s long physical hours and you are constantly reminded you are starting from the bottom. I feel for every young stylist going thru that stage and I’m here to tell you it’s worth it! Most high-end salons require you to start in this position but it’s for good reason. It will shape you into the best Stylist you can be for your clients.

Please tell us about your business.
I pride myself in being able to provide my clients with multiple services. I do extensions, cut, color, makeup and styling/updos. I would say, I specialize in balayage because it’s what I do most and I love it! Whether that’s going lighter, darker or adding dimension. Balayage is so versatile and you can really customize each look for every client. I am dedicated to elevating my skill by attending hair shows/classes and keeping up to date with the latest trends and techniques.

Often it feels as if the media, by and large, is only focused on the obstacles faced by women, but we feel it’s important to also look for the opportunities. In your view, are there opportunities that you see that women are particularly well positioned for?
I love this question! Of course, there are many issues we still need to improve as a society but I am thankful for this amazing industry that empowers women on a daily! There is something unstoppable about a woman who loves and takes care of herself and has the confidence to inspire others. I believe any opportunity is available to us if we want it!
