Today we’d like to introduce you to Joshua Rodriguez.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started doing makeup when I was very young. I would do makeup on my sister and cousins and then eventually as I grew older, my sister and her friends would have me do their makeup, so they could go out. It was something I never took seriously until I became the counter manager for Clinique. That’s when I started taking it a little more serious, ladies would come in and I would do their makeup and they would leave my chair telling me that I was so good and that if I did makeup on the side and, of course, I would tell them no at the time. I eventually built up my clientele and ended up leaving Clinique and started working from home. When I decided to start freelancing, that’s when makeup was starting to get a little more popular and everyone was interested in getting their makeup done, so I became very busy and very popular. I am from a small town called Odessa, TX. Word eventually got out that I was one of the best in the area and I eventually started working on clients from surrounding cities and that’s where my career took off. I was always booked and busy and always had work. I eventually started putting makeup workshops together. I’ve had a total of 15 workshops and each workshop would sell out within the 1st week. I became a local celebrity in my city and I was the go to a makeup artist. Everything was going great for me, I was making a lot of money but I wasn’t happy, I wasn’t happy living in Odessa. I got tired of the same scenery, waking up and doing the same thing over and over again. I knew I had to move and my eyes were set on Dallas, TX. I would always say, I was going to move but it never happened. Weeks, months, and years would pass by and I was still in Odessa and I grew desperate and anxious until one day, I had enough and I told myself, “I have to get up and make sh*t happen” and that’s what I did, I got up, packed up my things and without a plan I made the big move to Dallas. And now, here I am, I haven’t been here that long but I’m doing what I said I’ve always wanted to do. Trying to make a name known for myself like I did in Odessa. I’m patient and I know my time will come. I wake up every morning and speak these things into existence!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Lol, the road has definitely been a bumpy one. When people know you’re good at what you do and when people see your potential they see you as a threat. Those people are what you call haters. I’ve dealt with many haters in my life and I know how to deal with them accordingly. All you have to do is IGNORE THEM! As Rupaul says, “Unless they gonna pay your bills, pay them, bitches, no mind”
Please tell us about Makeup By Josh.
What sets me apart from the rest is my ability to transform. That’s what I specialize in. Transformations! It’s crazy what makeup brushes and some paint can do. And what I am most proud of as a brand is how every single one of my clients leaves my chair in tears and feeling like a brand new person. That’s the best feeling in the world, to know that I made someone feel beautiful and more confident in themselves.
Who have you been inspired by?
I would have to say, my mom. My mom has a total of 6 kids. She had 2 sets of twin boys and 2 girls. Yes, 2 sets of twin boys. Lol, I am a twin and we are identical and he happens to do makeup as well. The other twins are identical as well but they aren’t into makeup, lol and then, that leaves my sister, Ashlii, and Sara. My mother has inspired me because she is a strong, courageous woman. While my dad would work, she would stay home, clean, cook, have to change our diapers, take us all a bath and she would still manage to get herself ready and do her makeup. She never made excuses!
