Life and Work with Kayla Jones – Mims

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayla Jones – Mims.

Kayla, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Like so many others, I started doing hair in my living room just for fun six years ago. I honestly did not want to make a career of hairstyling. At the time, I was a Medical Assistant and phlebotomist attempting to pursue schooling as a registered nurse. While enrolling in the nursing program at a local junior college, my mom expressed that she thought it would be a great idea to give cosmetology a try. I thought it was the silliest idea ever. Lol. I thought to do hair for fun was cool, but making a career of it wasn’t the smartest choice. In the end, it turned out to be the best decision of my life.

I enrolled at Paul Mitchell the school in Dallas and it was definitely an experience. Once I completed my 1500hrs., I hit the ground running. I was doing every hair type and hairstyle that you could think of, but after one year I was growing unhappy with my career. I prayed and prayed, being very specific with God for the things that I wanted and needed. Now, this is where it gets interesting. I prayed for an overflow of loyal clients (I prayed for so many clients that I wouldn’t be able to work at the clinic & the salon), I prayed for a clientele that was serious about the health of their hair and I prayed to be able to combine medical & cosmetology.

One month later, my phone was ringing off the hook with clients wanting to book and wanting to get their natural hair healthy. One month after that, God opened my eyes to hair restoration, which I am now a Hair Loss Practitioner (allowing me to combine medical & cosmetology). On the third month, I had to resign from my job at the clinic because I had too many clients on my schedule, so I couldn’t do both. My journey is not my own, it is a blueprint that God has laid out for me… and I’m simply following it.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road has definitely been bumpy. From losing friends and business partners to gaining a piece of mind and a positive circle. It has been crazy.

I would advise other young women to figure out what you love the most about your career and make that your specialty. I love hair, but I don’t want to do ALL hair services. Lol. The biggest advice I can give is… know who your true supporters are and surround yourself with positive energy.

Please tell us about your work.
I am a Hair Loss Practitioner and natural hair ambassador. I work with clients that are suffering from different types of Alopecia, Lupus and Female Pattern Baldness. I specialize in natural hair clients. You must be 100% natural or six months transitioning before receiving services. I also provide extension services depending on the health of the hair.

Hairjones411 is different from most salons because the focus is natural hair & healthy hair. Giving women of color the opportunity to love their hair again is an amazing feeling.

Were there people and/or experiences you had in your childhood that you feel laid the foundation for your success?
When I was growing up, it was all about relaxers and not having “nappy” hair. Also, when I was a child, the myth was that “black women couldn’t grow long hair.”

Hairjones411 has decided to put an end to the myth and prove what natural hair can do… without relaxers! By the way, “nappy” is not in my vocabulary. Lol!
