Life and Work with Kendra Brooks

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kendra Brooks.

Kendra, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was born and raised in Stillwater, OK. I received a major in Apparel Merchandising and minored in Marketing, graduating Oklahoma State University on the deans honor roll in 2006. I moved to Dallas to work at the World Trade Center for a multi rep showroom, The Ritz Group. I was the showroom manager there for seven years.

I then stepped away from the apparel business to raise my daughter, Peyton. Peyton is now seven years old and in the 2nd grade. With her being in school I had the calling to get back into sales. My husband and I had been remodeling and building homes and so my focus had shifted from apparel to home goods.

My husband’s business partner is from India and he brought us a few quilts from his latest visit to his family. We loved wrapping up with them on the couch and we decided we needed to share with our friends and family. So, one thing led to another and soon he was sending us several. Our friends and family loved them so much we got more and I decided this is where I wanted to focus my time.

I love being able to provide comfort and warmth to my customers. The stories they have shared truly make this adventure so worthwhile. The quilts really come to life once they are in a home and being used to get comfortable. They are so fun and colorful they add such life to any room!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The advice I would give is to do something you love and believe in! It will show to others and reflect that happiness in your own life! Develop lasting relationships with people you meet along the way and lift them up. The community of women entrepreneurs is growing and it is such a great family to be a part of.

What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of? What sets you apart from others?
I specialize in selling hand made, one-of-a-kind quilts. They are made from vintage textiles and sari’s from communities in India. Being machine washable makes them perfect for any home and everyday life. You can take them to the park, concerts, soccer games (or my fav), snuggled on the couch. They also make the perfect gifts; new moms, house warming, graduation, weddings, etc…

I love how these quilts are one of a kind, like people no two are the same. So, I love how they get matched up with someone and they become the perfect combo. I am so proud of this product because it is helping support the people from those communities.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve benefited from using?
My best tool for my business is Instagram. It is such a powerful marketing tool. There is still so much for me to learn as far as Instagram so having that challenge has been fun.

I love to read and find that after a long day snuggling up with a book is the best form of me-time!
