Life and Work with Meena Shabazz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Meena Shabazz.

Meena, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My view of the world is unique. I have always had a different perspective than others in my age group, especially since I was homeschooled, I didn’t receive the same type of training. Art has always been a part of my life. From singing, dancing, drawing, and even something as natural as speaking were forms of art enjoyed and acknowledged as channeling our creative energies! When I was younger a lot of my time was consumed with listening to fictional stories on audiobooks and watching others on t.v. accomplish their goals and fulfill their life’s quest’s These were definitely engaging and exciting activities for my mind, but as time passed on I began to realize how little attention I was giving to grow my own story. I knew I needed to focus more on me and my journey, so I gradually withdrew from the habit of consuming myself in the lives of others. With the intent to change in mind, and inspiration from my very talented older brother, I started gravitating to the act of drawing! This became my “go to” activity when ever I needed something to do. Soon I transitioned from drawing to painting when one of my sisters brought home some paint for a project that she had! I found the act of creating and growing my artistic skills to be very therapeutic and productive! As my skill level evolved, I was encouraged to go out and share my creations with the world. I started exploring different mediums and methods and how I could include them in my diverse art style. Acrylics and markers are the mediums that I am currently working with. My creative quality has been influenced and inspired by many things such as spirituality, indigenous cultures, nature, knowledge of self, and most especially by the people I am closely surrounded by and their ever-evolving wisdom!

Many would agree that this reality we live in is not our own and that we have little to no control over what happens in our lives but I have come to know otherwise. We are CREATORS! We are ARTISTS! We create our reality with every emotion we feel, thought we think, and action we make! With the knowledge that I have gained, and continue to gain, I choose to use my creative art skills to contribute to helping heal the consciousness of this earth and return it back to it’s divine state! I am fairly new to the art scene of Dallas. I’ve met a lot of great individuals of similar journeys and I have been introduced to various artist platforms around the DFW! I am definitely looking forward to seeing what the future has in store for me on this creative path to light!

Has it been a smooth road?
I think stepping out of my comfort zone and taking risks was the biggest thing that I have had to overcome. These experiences have really taught me how you have to let go of “fear of the unknown” and just walk in your greatness! Today, when feelings of doubt spring up, I don’t internalize them, I let it remain a passing thought. That in itself is a grand achievement for me! The wisdom I would share with my fellow young women would be to let go of judgment and expectation, embrace love and gratitude, and remember that the universe supports and assists you in making your life happen!

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Subkonscious Kreationz – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
I am a multifaceted, self taught artist, and I currently live in Dallas Texas. My mission as an artist is tied with what I believe to be my purpose in life, which is to spread truth and help heal the collective consciousness of this world! People have been very supportive of my vision and the feedback has been awesome!

Now to talk about my brand Subkonscious Kreationz. I have been actively practicing my various crafts for about a year and a half. The creation of the name Subkonscious Kreationz was inspired by learning about the power of the mind in relationship with the unseen forces of “energy” that constitutes everything. The subconscious mind is the part of the mind where memories are stored and ancestral information/knowledge can be accessed. It is the subtle part of the brain that influences everything about an individual. When I am in the mode of creating, my intention is not only to create art that stimulates the consciousness of a mind but also I seek to encourage the memory of one’s true self to come to the surface by tapping into the subconscious mind with visual stimulation, hence the name Subkonscious Kreationz.

There’s a wealth of academic research that suggests that a lack of mentors and networking opportunities for women has materially affected the number of women in leadership roles. Smart organizations and industry leaders are working to change this, but in the meantime, do you have any advice for finding a mentor and building a network?
Sure!

Try putting yourself in a new environment. Raising your voice, letting others in on your vision and connecting with individuals in the community is what builds a network. It’s starts a movement! Don’t be afraid to engage with people you are interested in. You never know where that leap will lead you! And lastly, be yourself, walk in your greatness, and sooner or later you will link up with the right people (such as a mentor!)and build something great!
