Life and Work with Shauna Glenn

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shauna Glenn.

Shauna, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve been a writer for the last fifteen years or so, but have always had an interest in entertaining and styling. I guess I’m tuned in to that creative part of my brain.

After my daughter started college, I thought I should probably get a job that pays more money than writing articles for blogs and magazines. Plus, I wanted to make a change. I reached out to a local interior designer friend and asked if I could work for him. I started a week later.

For the next three years, I learned everything I could about interior design, but with all my clients I added my own kind of flair. Since I had no formal training in interior design (like a college degree), I didn’t know the rules. So, I made up my own as I went along.

During the three years, I also wrote my third novel. I took a leave to make the edits with the intention of returning. At the same time, my husband and I built our dream home. I began posting photos to Instagram and it sort of took off from there. A new career was born. People began reaching out asking if I would help style their spaces. Today, we are a full-service interior design/renovation firm. We get our clients 100% from Instagram.

Has it been a smooth road?
It definitely has its ups and downs. With any growing business, there are expenses you don’t anticipate. There are lots of nights I lie awake wondering how I’m going to be able to make it all work. Every day, the sun comes up and we forge ahead and work our butts off to pull off the sometimes impossible.

My advice to anyone wanting to start a business–expect to work harder and care more than anyone else in the room.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Shauna Glenn Design – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
We offer full-service styling and renovations, from kitchens and bathrooms to one family’s second home. I am known for mixing different styles, giving a more eclectic aesthetic. My use of global textiles and shopping clients’ homes sets me apart from other designers. My brand reflects the way our clients live, not the way I live. Our goal is to help people love where they live.

What advice would you give to someone at the start of her career?
Be prepared to be discouraged, but never let it make you stop doing what you’re doing. Listen to your gut, that little voice inside. Think of yourself as a leader, a warrior, a slayer of dragons.
