Today we’d like to introduce you to Sheilahe Brown.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Sheilahe. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’ve been competing since 1984. Before that, I was a trained dancer. I started judging in 1990. I got my pro card in 2011. I was diagnosed with lupus in 2013. I now have a nonprofit lupus foundation and I have my own fitness show. I am also a choreographer for celebrity athletes a brand ambassador
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has been a tough road for me but I know it’s been tougher on others with the same disease. I was forced into retirement because of Lupus. I was forced into retirement because of lupus. I miss it, terribly. But I have prayed about it and it seems like my career is going towards helping Lupus Warriors. I have had to come to grips with me no longer competing and still staying relevant in the fitness industry
We’d love to hear more about your organization.
I touch hundreds of athletes every month helping them with their stage presence and being a part of their journey as they grace the stage. I am known as a posing coach. I also Judge Fitness shows but now my career has taken a turn into holding fundraisers to finance Lupus Survivors medical bills.
What sets me apart from others is that I’m still in the fitness industry and I move around pretty well and stay busy while still fighting this disease.
Seemingly I lead a normal life.
Do you think there are structural or other barriers impeding the emergence of more female leaders?
There’s strong leadership in my industry but I’m sure in other industries, women are looked overdue to us being ‘too emotional ‘
