Life and Work with Vanessa Levin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Vanessa Levin.

Vanessa, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was a public Pre-K teacher for 20 years, my blog started out as my classroom website for parents in 2001. I quickly realized that parents never visited the site, but teachers were finding it on Google, so switched gears and started posting helpful ideas for other preschool teachers.

Early childhood education has traditionally been a very isolating profession, but the Internet started to change all that in the early 2000s. As more and more teachers started finding the site, they started making requests for specific content, which I created for them and continue to create today. Eventually, I left the classroom to devote myself full-time to Pre-K Pages, and eventually my membership site, The Teaching Tribe.

Over the years, Pre-K Pages has gained online popularity with teachers and is now one of the most visited early childhood websites in the U.S.

Has it been a smooth road?
There have definitely been challenges along the way. Being patient and persistent were the most difficult challenges I encountered, but they were also the two traits that helped me the most.

Many people think that online success can happen in a few weeks or months, but the truth is that it doesn’t usually happen that way. I think of every forward movement in my business as a move in the right direction.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
As a veteran public school teacher of 20 years, I have been there and done that many times when it comes to teaching young children. I help preschool teachers teach better, save time, and live more through my blog, Pre-K Pages, a free Facebook group, and my premium membership site.

Teachers can visit Pre-K Pages to get ideas and inspiration, I call this the A-la-carte level. If they have questions and want to connect with other teachers, then they can join my free Facebook group. Finally, if they want to transform their teaching with all the tools and training they need to up their teaching game, then they can join my membership site, The Teaching Tribe.

What sets me apart from others is that I offer more than just one-off blog posts, I help teachers transform their teaching practice in whichever way they’re ready for.

I’m definitely most proud of my membership site, The Teaching Tribe. Helping teachers understand the “why” behind the “what” is one of the most fulfilling aspects of membership. When teachers achieve a deeper understanding of what they do, their students will experience the benefits immediately.

Do you think there are structural or other barriers impeding the emergence of more female leaders?
Teaching is a field dominated by women, especially the youngest grades.
