Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Buyers.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started painting when I was young watching my grandmother. She told me I had a gift, but I lost interest over the next several years when I discovered drugs and alcohol. I fell into such a deep addiction that alcoholic neuropathy took over my tendons, and I couldn’t even hold a paintbrush if I wanted to. I was told the nerve damage0 was irreversible, and that I was just one of those addiction cases that couldn’t beat the odds. I had lost complete hope, but then I survived a near-fatal overdose, and when I woke up in the hospital, I had a changed heart. I knew what I’d always wanted to do with my life was to be an artist, and I knew I could only do it sober. So at first, I just started painting to help my nerves heal and maintain my sobriety, but then I got better as I healed. I started posting my paintings online, and people were interested. I beat odds that doctors and psychiatrists said I never would, and today I am 2 years and five months sober. Today I paint out of my home studio, and my paintings are hung in private homes and offices all over the country. I am inspired by the world around me I missed out on. My second chance at life is my motivation.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Not really. First of all, getting sober and surviving withdrawals is just, well, really hard. I almost died about six months into recovery and I kind of thought what’s the point. I kept going and everything I pushed through was worth it. I’m living my dream and painting every day.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I create acrylic paintings on canvas. I work mostly from photographs I’ve taken combined with details and colors I’ve taken from my mind. I specialize in Texas landscapes, which is where I was born and raised. The thing I am most proud of is my sobriety so I am creating art with a story behind it in hopes that my story might reach someone that needs to hear it.
What were you like growing up?
My mom said I wasn’t afraid of anything.
