Meet Amy Power of The Power Group in Dallas Design District

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Power.

Amy, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
In college, I had a wonderful professor who had worked for decades as a PR professional. In his class, I wrote my first press release and instantly knew I would be a PR practitioner. I loved the ability to combine my natural curiosity with my passion for writing.

My career path began in Atlanta, Ga, working as an intern for Ketchum Public Relations. Following my graduation from college in 1990, I moved to Dallas and worked for one of the PR industry’s most desired agencies, Tracy-Locke/Pharr PR as well as a smaller firm, HadelerWhitePR, where I handled PR for emerging franchise brands.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I think if it were a smooth road, it would have been a boring one. The curves, peaks, and valleys of owning my own company are the learning experiences that continue to challenge and grow my skills as a leader, wife, mom, and friend.

Personally, I never wanted my children to grow up in daycare but I also didn’t want to be a stay-at-home mom. I was seeking that “perfect” balance, which any working mom will tell you, is always imperfect. When I reflect back on the last 20 years I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to have my children by my side as I grew the company.

Working from home (before it was widely accepted), presented a unique set of challenges but I wouldn’t trade the experience for anything else. In the early years of my company my days were also filled with the demands of infants and toddlers, preschool, homework and after school practices. I handled a lot of business from the soccer field and I wrote a lot of PR plans and press releases after the children went to bed.

When my son was very young he asked me, “Mommy, are you a ‘pwesident’?” It was the first time anyone had asked. Of course, I said, “yes!” Twenty years later, I wouldn’t change a thing.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into The Power Group story. Tell us more about it.
The Power Group is a full-service public relations firm that helps companies accomplish their goals through strategic storytelling, brand awareness, and personal connections. Under the leadership of founder and President Amy Power, The Power Group comprises 13 full-time and contract team members.

The company has cultivated a reputation for creative excellence and has earned national acclaim for crisis management. This reputation has attracted an esteemed roster of clients, including Dallas’ West End Association, Neora, Red Bull, Orangetheory Fitness, Cushman & Wakefield, Golden Chick, Marriott, Hyatt, and the Texas FFA. Most importantly, The Power Group is a company where high-performers can excel and learn to be great leaders — leaders who shine in the industry, in their communities, and in life.

We are known for our ability to generate results and I’m especially proud of our award-winning crisis management.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t believe in luck. I believe in an intentional life that is tied to my personal faith. My business coach told me once, “Everything you have… you have created.” In other words, good, bad or otherwise, I have created the structure around me. For example, I love working on a team and have created a company where “Win Together” is one of our team’s core values.
