Today we’d like to introduce you to Anastasia Miller.
Anastasia, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have a BFA in Studio Art from UT Austin, where I studied painting and drawing. My first job out of school was as a wedding/event coordinator for a busy makeup studio. After learning about the industry and developing my skills as a makeup artist for three years, I decided to start my own wedding business, and Anastasia MUA Pro Hair + Makeup Team was born.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
For me, the biggest struggle believed in myself enough to go out on my own. Even though I’d already done bridal and commercial makeup for years through the company, I worked for, creating my own wedding business was daunting at first. I had a lot of positive feedback about my work, but I still had imposter syndrome, wondering, “can I do this on my own and work for myself?” The answer was yes.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
A big element to me is communication. I’ve worked with artists in the past who keep a client turned away from the mirror for the whole process, then turn them around and ask, “Do you like it?” There are so many elements to makeup and hair. I find that checking in at the right moments and knowing the right questions to ask is key to creating a look that a bride truly loves and feels beautiful in.
Our approach to bridal beauty is natural, fresh and designed to look amazing in person, in photos and on HD video. My makeup application puts an emphasis on natural, flawless foundation and soft focus blending. I use a minimalistic approach to create balance and enhance facial symmetry. My kit includes exclusively high end products, including Koh Gen Do Aqua Foundation. My professional hair artists have an eye for aesthetics and the artistic skill to create anything from a classic bridal updo to Pinterest boho to romantic beachy waves.
What were you like growing up?
Ever since I can remember, the answer to “What do you want to be when you grow up?” was always “An artist.” I drew and wrote a lot as a kid and was very inspired by aesthetic beauty. I was always extroverted and enjoyed meeting and learning about other people.
