Today we’d like to introduce you to April Humen.
April, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My journey started as a self-taught make-up artist in 2002. I worked as a freelance photographer, hair and make-up artist, shooting wedding and portfolio work. This really inspired me to complete a cosmetology course at the Aveda Institute in St Petersburg, FL.
Aveda was my first choice due to its modern curriculum and naturally based and environmentally conscience concept, which aligns with my own values. My goal was to pursue hair and make-up in the fashion industry.
After graduating from cosmetology school in 2005, I was invited to accept a limited position in the Master’s Styling Program at Aveda. My passion to dive into the industry led me to turn down the invitation and start at salon in Tampa, FL. Soon after I was offered a position at a Utah based talent agency as the head stylist working with a top international photographer. My duties included hair make-up and fashion styling, overseeing other stylist and make-up artists, and advising talent on their look. Years later, I ventured into the skin industry completing a Laser Certification in 2011. I opened two medical spas in the Dallas and East Texas area. During my ownership, I learned about skin and the significance of diet and skin care. Since starting a family, my goals have shifted. I decided to pursue this company which integrates my passions, while having the opportunity to be a part of another one of my biggest passions- family.
Has it been a smooth road?
I consider myself a woman of many hats, but master at none. I have so many interests that I have a tendency to jump around. Now that I am older, I realize how important it is to cultivate my God given talents. I feel like I finally have found my “thing” and I am ready to focus and grow. My pursuit used to be about money, but after having to close my medical spas down due to new state regulations, I struggled and my focus and priorities changed. It was a divine intervention. My pursuit became my passions and I have found success since then.
So, let’s switch gears a bit and go into the April Humen story. Tell us more about the business.
I offer full beauty service, from hair color, cut, styling, make-up and photography. I have an array of clientele that utilize my services from clients that just come to me for hair, and others that come to me for everything. This is my art. I offer full service photoshoots with hair, make-up, photo-styling and photography. I consider my photography to be digital art. I put my heart and soul in to my work making each photo a unique art piece. The photoshoots are so much fun. I love seeing the client open up and seeing their beauty shine. It’s very gratifying to see a client in love with their hair or make-up or photo. It drives me to learn more and do more.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
My goal for my business is to convey to the potential clientele that you can come and get our hair done, but you can also capture your beauty in this moment in a unique and artistic way by doing a photoshoot. That women of all ages can have fun and be beautiful. I hope to grow as an artist and book unique commercial shoots.
