Meet ArtWork Kirk

Today we’d like to introduce you to ArtWork Kirk.

ArtWork, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I drew a lot as a kid and when I took art1 in 10th grade my HS Art teacher moved me to AP classes, and I won several competitions and accepted a scholarship to go to the #1 College of Art at the time, in Baltimore. MD., I had numerous issues with the college over racial biases and cultural discrimination, and when I graduated, I came back to Texas and taught for years in Dallas, trying to build up and encourage young creatives with my fine art knowledge. I lost my job during the superintendent scandal/saga, and I’ve been freelancing ever since.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The life of an artist isn’t easy, and it’s not for everyone. You have to not only be able to withstand criticism, opinions, and biases from your lifestyle, but also your style of art. Then you must continue to do artwork while enduring and overcoming life struggles that God can throw at anyone. Art making can be a spiritual, mental, physical, and/or financial blessing or burden depending on your goals.” Then we can continue with “I remember my teachers in elementary school use to tell me I was wasting paper, and would make me throw my art in the trash, on several occasions. In College, my work was taken out of shows and context, due to the cultural insensitivity of privileged professors in a certain demographic. The key for me has been to continue to do what I do, through it all, for the few who can get me to do it when they call.

KirksWork – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I specialize in Portraits in all mediums, and Murals. I also maintain clients that utilize my graphic design and illustration skills, as well as teach private lessons, facilitate community arts programs, and host paint parties. I also paint live at events. My primary focus is getting to the paper, while building a current portfolio to apply for grants and residencies… I’m not really into making art for art’s sake at all. I like to work with small businesses and entrepreneurs on real projects that enhances their brand through my art however possible.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I feel like I came from nothing with this art, so everything I do is an accomplishment. I actually forget things. I’ve had countless awards that I was proud of when I received them; clients have made me proud to work with; Companies I’ve worked for; Student’s I’ve taught; but lately. Seeing someone’s emotions, especially crying, when they see the work I’ve done has been my most proudest moments.
