Meet Birdie Holly

Today we’d like to introduce you to Birdie Holly.

Birdie, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I grew up doing theatre and have always been in love with performing. Even as a child, I loved entertaining people and making others laugh. I use to stay up late at night watching TCM when I couldn’t sleep and fell head-over-heels in love with old Hollywood cinema. Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire, Judy Garland, Marilyn Monroe, I looked up to all of them. I admired their ability to go above and beyond as performers, each person had something very special about them. So you can imagine how my love for theatre and love of the golden era of Hollywood lead me to burlesque! It truly does encompass everything I adore. I became obsessed with it and bought every book and watched every video I could find. I finally got the courage to submit for Glitterbomb, a weekly queer variety show in Denton. I had a friend tell me they love to give new performers a shot, so I went for it. I submitted for their 90’s show and they took a chance on me! Now I perform there quite often! I am forever grateful they opened their stage to me, it has changed my life.

Has it been a smooth road?
It has not been! I really struggled with confidence at the beginning. As a performer, you’re always second guessing your work and telling yourself you’re not good enough and what you’re putting on stage isn’t good enough. You really are your worst enemy. But as I have grown, I have learned to trust my instincts and be gentle with myself! Confidence comes with learning how to do that.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Birdie Holly – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Birdie is more on the side of classic burlesque, but with a dash of neo. I strive to not put myself into a box! I love the unexpected and incorporate that into every number I do. I always try to give the audience a little something extra.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love Denton! I have been here for 5(ish) years and I love everything about it. Everyone that has built something amazing here has done so by starting at the ground level. Great entertainment, great community, great food and still has a relatively smaller town feel to it. Granted, it is getting a little overcrowded. Rent and cost of living is getting rather expensive.
