Today we’d like to introduce you to Charlicia Harper.
Charlicia, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I moved to Dallas roughly four years ago, on a leap of faith, and decided to start my “adult” life journey. I had no family here, very few friends, a new found company to work for, and plenty of ignorance of how “the real world” operated. I had recently graduated with my bachelor from the University of Kansas, where I played on the Women’s basketball team and studied Sociology/ Communications. College introduced me to fun, D1 athletics, puppy love, and multicultural awareness. However, very little of how to truly thrive in society, and make my talents work for me… Thus, upon arriving in Dallas I began to soul search and deeply analyze myself. What I liked to do? What were my triggers? Where is my focus, and when do I lose focus? Also, what can generate passive income for myself? I began to write… Everything I went through from relationships, work troubles, past triumphs that still tripped me up, and positive ways to overcome those feelings, emotions, habits, and trials.
During my writing stage, I worked as a Career Counselor for 16-24-year-olds. However, ultimately, I dealt with everything from their personal emotions, past struggles, parents, societal trials, etc. Anything you can name… I was there to help them figure it out. However, I wasn’t even figuring my own life out, ironic right? Well, I decided to leave that company and pursue clothing. Created an LLC, researched wholesales, marketing, etc. I made the mistake of telling everyone what I wanted to do on the front end, and it discouraged me to the point where I did not follow through. On to the next… I started to cook. I cooked, a lot. Mostly for my ex, who would create this doubt in my mind about my talent, and whether I was “good enough,” if I was “doing it right.” Everything could always be better…
Thus, I continued to practice. I had gatherings at my home to work on my craft. I spent countless amounts of money feeding others for free to strengthen my skills. I also began to do my own flyers, marketing, and creating business plans and ideals. From my first go around, I realized in order to walk in my truth and truly flourish, I needed to start on my own. Thus, I began Ubering (for extra money to fund my endeavors), selling plates on the weekend, coordinating the release of my first book “Never Been Enough,” and developing a name, which fits my entire brand. I came up with “Nourish,” which means to “provide with the food or other substances necessary for growth, health, and good condition.” I seek to feed into others through the mind, body, and soul. Mind: the books I write and release to enlighten, encourage, and heal others. Body: through the catering and meals I am able to provide others. (which I ultimately seek to own a restaurant/lounge). Soul: Giving back to the community and young adults, not only as a Counselor but mentor. (I currently run a group called “Girls on Fire” to help struggling young women find themselves, and they are worth it.
However, my plan is to expand this into the community for men and women. I have had 2 book release parties/signings and am currently working on my second book. I will be selling large potato plates (alongside partners Kinn22) to the public 3xs weekly, alongside a very carefully put together the menu for weekends. Also, I am working to develop non-profit and for-profit organizations here in Dallas. Stay tuned…
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
This has not been a smooth road for me at all, as I have had relationships sidetrack me, and hold me back. I have quit my job in an attempt to pursue my dreams, only to fail. I have gone dead broke attempting to invest in myself, in others. No lights in my home, having to Uber to and from work just for gas, and the list goes on. However, one thing I can say that has remained constant through the storms and bumpy roads… my faith.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
My company as a whole has yet to launch. However, the pieces that bring it all together (books, mentorship, food) have independently been flourishing. The plan is to have it all collectively operate by January.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My parents and family have supported me financially, emotionally and mentally. My friends have been such a great sport with ensuring I stay focused, reminding me of my greatness, as well as supporting without seeking discounts. My coworkers have also pushed me towards pursuing my “side hustles” aka dreams and being there for me every step of the way. Also, those who have followed me since my AAU and college basketball days inspire me daily, as I do them. The words they speak of me is beyond encouraging and uplifting. The positive influence in my life is overwhelming, and I’m beyond grateful.
