Today we’d like to introduce you to Chas Foreman.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
O&H was born from a love affair with wood and an affection for the rustic. We began as a woodworking shop creating furniture and decor. We were inspired and encouraged to expand our services and began promoting our professional graphic art and design skills.
Touched by how encouraging words can fuel a fire, we launched our apparel brand with designs inspired by wonders in nature and the hard work of craftsmen. We keep our designs and messages positive. Our product inventory is limited because we enjoy creating new designs. Once an item is sold out, we replace it with a fresh look. We offer a range of professional design services from branding to videography.
Personally, I grew up loving to draw and create stories with friends or action figures. I spent a lot of time outdoors in creeks and woods. After studying creative arts in college, I learned woodworking. Oak and Hatchet is a result of all of these favorite things of mine.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Just one year in and it has been fun. I knew nothing about running a business when I started. I’ve learned that being organized is critical to business success. I don’t enjoy that part. I enjoy making things that people enjoy. I would like my responsibility to end there.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Oak & Hatchet story. Tell us more about the business.
I’m proud to say that O&H is for the makers. Not only do we create things that creative folks like, but we try to involve folks in the creative processes – from modeling apparel to photography to design ideas. I like to stay in the background and remain anonymous. I simply go by the brand. Not many people know that it is me behind it.
The O&H logo has an acorn that represents inspiration and the hatchets are hard work. These two elements are needed to make anything. I love to get inspired by having conversations with people and then shouldering the burden, working together to make that idea come to life.
Moving forward we are producing 100% made in USA apparel items.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t believe in luck. I believe in context. Business-wise, are you making something or providing a service that is relevant to people? I also believe that an individual’s will and perspective on life is critical to success. So, If I believe in my business and it is culturally relevant/people like it, then the business should succeed.
