Meet Chinasa Broxton Okorocha and Carlos Dashawn Moore of Tribe Mafia in Denton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chinasa Broxton Okorocha and Carlos Dashawn Moore.

Chinasa and Carlos, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
We are Tribe Mafia. The next upcoming Hip-Hop duo, emerging from Austin, Texas. We were formally a rap group of four members. Now we are a duo. We started making music in high school. We went from performing at lunch tables amongst our peers to doing pep rally’s. After high school, we started performing at local venue parlors such as coffee shops, tattoo parlors, barber-shops, and small venues downtown. After building a respected amount of recognition in our city, we were offered to perform paid shows during the SXSW spring event. Just recently we were booked on our first major event to headline the GMI Summer Music Festival. As cliché as this may sound we strongly believe with hard work and consistency your dreams are very well reachable. We are the first Hip-Hop group from Austin Texas to be verified on Instagram..

We had many great shows and many shows that humbles us. We know what it feels like to perform in front of a crowd of five and we know how it is like to perform in front of a crowd of 2000+. To help other local artists in our community with branding and expanding their name we host and create a grand amount of events for them to partake in. We also do this for free because we also know how it is like to chase a dream but your financial situation isn’t sufficient enough to support it fully. We honestly strive to make Austin a more interactive community in music like the communities in Houston and Dallas, Texas. We are now both constantly flying out of state to do shows getting ready for our College City Tour with Mikey See, Erik Goca, Bella B, and Justina Valentine from Wild n Out on MTV. We are currently signed to a distribution deal with Indie Nation, powered by Sony Music The Orchard.

Has it been a smooth road?
Nothing good ever comes easy. The hardest part of being an artist is watching a team member leave the band. We are both fully invested financially, mentally and emotionally into this group. We hit rock bottom so many times over the course of 10 years. We have been victims of being scammed countless times, losing over $10,000. How does one lose so much money? When someone sells you a dream, and it sounds luminous to the ears, it is very hard to not fall into the trap. Luckily, we learned how to overcome every obstacle. As an artist we must not be afraid of is taking a risk. Taking a leap of faith is sometimes all we have to keep going.

On a positive note, I will say that things are starting to brighten up for us. Shortly after losing two members of our group, we were getting booked with countless shows, week after week. Being a college student, it has become quite challenging to manage school life and music life. That’s bittersweet. We signed our first autograph from a person who lives in Germany. 2019 has been our year of reconstruction and success. Learning how to trust your process is like a river flowing through a valley. You cannot see the ending, but you know it will be there.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
Tribe Mafia is a group of two individuals. Chinasa Broxton Okorocha (Chinasty) and Carlos Dashawn Moore (Dashawn Daniels). Tribe Mafia has two significant meanings to its name. Tribe stands for family, and the Mafia stands for business. Tribe Mafia was named after our ethnicity. We are Native American and Nigerian. Both ethnicities are significantly famous for having tribes in their land and taking care of their families.

We are in the genre of Hip-Hop/Rap/Rnb/ and now Pop. We are most known for our high levels of energy when performing. We are also known for our networking skills. We are most proud to say that we are creating a network to help other independent artists make a name for themselves. We are also very fond of being the first verified duo Instagram. I think that shows how our hard work is being acknowledged.

What sets us apart from others is that we aren’t afraid to accept failure, we love learning new ways to better not only ourselves but the people around us. We notice that if we can be the first to pull artists in together, we can start a powerful unit of support. In short, we look for ways for everybody to win, not only just us.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Dallas is perfect because of the size of this city, without a doubt there is always someone looking for entertainment. This is why Chinasa selected UNT to study his master’s degree. The number of opportunities available in this part of town is unbelievable for an artist. I would recommend any artist to start in a city that they are from first.
